She came from a faraway land

to conquer her dreams and make her parents proud

she thought all will be flowers and faeries

but alas her illusion was cruelly shattered

Her kingdom was cushioned and sheltered

but her new abode was made up of thin woods and cold breeze

her faraway land had no issues like racism or sexism

but her new abode breathes for issues like racism or sexism

she was fair in her land

here she is brown

she was treated like the princess she was in her land

but here she is being treated like the pauper she is not

Baruch College is a commuter college based in Manhattan.Hence, I was always a skeptic of Baruch College’s extracurricular and social environment. Even though, as far as I’ve seen, the people at Baruch are kind of introvert and they don’t really interact much, I’ve been pleasantly surprised in the college’s effort of mixing the diverse Baruch student community. Baruch has a lot of events almost every day of the week. One such event was the Marketing and Advertising Panel. So many products get sold everyday. But what is the main driving force of such large amount of sales? People don’t see the tiny font-sized ingredients list first. NO. They first see the name and the carefully worded descriptions on the product package. They also see those carefully planned out advertisements which prompts and creates desire inside us to purchase that product. The sale of a product large depends on effective advertising. The marketing and advertising panel also boasted Baruch Alumni. It was an enlightening experience.

On March 1st, 2016, I went to attend a club event of BSA-Bangladesh Student Association, of Baruch. The meeting was about recruiting new members and talking about the club, in general.

In general, the club is a cultural club. A lot of cultural events are organised by the members. Bangladesh is a country of festivities where people from every walk of life are welcomed with open arms. The warmth and generosity of Bangladeshis are reflected in this club. The country is a secular, democratic country where the tradition is interwoven in the urban life. I have lived in Dhaka, the capital of Bangladesh and, life in Bangladesh is amazing, despite the astronomical costs. Bangladesh also has the longest sea beach in the world.

The club congregation was a great experience and I met a lot of different people. Many members gave a lot of educational advice and talked about their years at Baruch. It was especially beneficial for freshmans like us. I would suggest people to look into the club as there would be various cultural events. Plus, people would also glimpse a small part of Bangladesh. People in general don’t know a lot about Bangladesh and hence, they have a misconception. As a result, I would suggest everyone to come and see what Bangladesh has to offer.

I forgot how beautiful art exhibitions could be. Overtime, studies and homework overtook me until I drowned in then. Until one day, when I decided to leave all my worries at my doorstep and went out, with no destination in mind, until I saw myself at the doorstep of The Sydney Mishkin Gallery. Dr. Sandra Kraskin is the director of this amazing gallery at Baruch College. The art exhibition was by the artist Ellen K. Levy.

Ellen K. Levy is a New York based artist who is completing a PhD of artists involved with science and technology at the Zurich Node of the Planetary Collegium (Z-Node), in collaboration with the University of Plymouth in Plymouth, England. Her works of art are fantastic and unusual. Overall, I had a really fun time at the museum and it was very enlightening.
