Weekly Reflection 10/22

This has been a relatively good week. A lot of the weeks are blending together now, but I’ve somewhat fallen into the routine. I’ve gotten used to the different paces of all of my classes. Some of my classes are really slow but others seem to go by really quickly, however, I don’t find the work difficult. The difficult part is finding time to juggle everything. My sociology class is somewhat difficult, but again it’s not the actual work. People in that class don’t really respect the professor and then just talk in class which is frustrating, especially since I sit in the back of the class. I can’t change those people but I started sitting in the front of my class even though it was away from my friends. I also decided to start studying for that class with some other students and my friends. However, I really enjoy college so far because I feel more independent and I like how quickly it moves.

Enrichment Workshop (Career)

I went to the STARR Center to receive help looking for jobs. I’ve been  looking recently, however not as seriously as I should be and I picked up some papers giving me information on things like how I should or could fix my resume, which I really found the most useful. I’ve also been meaning to go when my friend told me that she was applying for a job and that she wanted me to come with her. She also told me that I could probably apply to the same place and I did. They didn’t have time to interview us but they did take our resumes and gave us their card. I was happy that I finally at least applied for something. I’ve had jobs before but it was never really something I looked for myself. I get a lot of emails that have to do  with STARR or career events from Baruch, I just never seriously considered going to them. Going to the STARR Center was still nice though because I can be more familiar for the next time that I do actually go.

Enrichment Workshop – Student Life Event

The club that I am leaning the most toward is WICC, or the West Indian Culture Club, and it is because I really like the events that they hold and how welcoming they are. I also find comfort in knowing that I can find a community of people from the African Diaspora, which I am most accustomed to. I enjoy meeting people of different cultures and backgrounds, but I like knowing that I can still stay true and find validation inside this group. One of their events that I went to was the “Who Am I?”, where we discussed the lives and roles of black people in our communities, in America, and other issues that only people from any part of the African Diaspora would face. I really like talking about issues that face the black community because it I like to know what people think, and, being apart of this community, I want to find ways to fix these problems,  whether it happens now or in another generation. I also just like having intellectual discussions with other people. It was interesting to see how people from the same walks of life or facing the same problems deal with those issues differently. It really opened my eyes to the views of people from the Caribbean, African countries, and even just the mid-West. I am pretty sure this is the club I am going to join.

Enrichment Workshop #2

Hey everyone,

For the second workshop I decided to check out a STARR career workshop. The name of the workshop “Managing Your Own Personal Growth” was presented by Joe Slota. Mr. Slota covered topics such as managing priorities in life and balancing life, personal growth, friends, and more. The workshop helped develop views on the business world. One memorable thing I remember was Joe saying that in the business world, it’s best to be yourself rather than someone you’re not. Another was that impressions are made not only by what you say but rather what is not being said such as body language. Lastly, it was a quote where he said he “works to live, not live to work” which stuck with me because he said if you follow this principle, you’ll never work a day in life.

This workshop helped me explore my career goals by introducing me to priorities and happiness which will help me in the future. The idea that we should find something we’re passionate about and be ourselves is something that some people don’t consider because they care more about money and sacrifice their happiness, family, or other important things in the process. I realized that in order to achieve my career goals, I’ll need to consider what my priorities are and how I can apply for jobs that satisfy them. Joe Slota said the business world requires the ability to connect with people and in order to achieve these goals, I’ll need to further explore the STARR career center. I’m aware that the center provides advice and conducts mock interviews, builds resumes, provides internships, jobs, and more. This workshop was a good start to seeing what the STARR center offers and will likely attend more workshops in the future. I would highly recommend attending a workshop because there’s something to learn and could provide insight on what you really want from Baruch.

Enrichment Workshop

For the Enrichment Workshop, I decided to go to the Tibet House on 15th St mainly because  I was pretty close to it at the time. It was also good that there was no admission so I decided to explore the museum. The Tibet House, as the name suggest, had cultural works focusing on Tibetan culture and religion. I saw lots of images and depiction of bodhisattvas, which is a person who is trying to become a Buddha.  There were statues and artwork of Buddha and bodhisattvas whose names I can not pronounce and these works were pretty vibrant. The main exhibit that was being presented was by an artist called Tenzing Rigdol, a contemporary Tibetan artist. His artwork called “My World Is In Your Blind Spot” depicts five Buddhas all in different colored clothing:red, blue, yellow, green, etc, on fire. Their posture seemed relaxed despite the fact they were burning alive. and it was pleasing to the eye despite its gruesome nature because the Buddhas were depicted in a silhouette like form.

This past week I decided to tackle the academic workshop. I went to The Museum at FIT on 27th Street with a friend, at first I didn’t love the idea of going to a fashion museum but finally decided to go because it was very close to Baruch, just a sixteen minute walk away!. But once I arrive it turned out to be a very interesting and enjoyable experience, I had never been in a fashion museum and it was very informative. When we first arrived I was quite surprised by the setting, the rooms were dark, but there was just enough light to be able to see the different clothes which came from a wide variety of historical periods, influences and cultures. It was very interesting to see some of the first pieces of work from world renown designers such as Giorgio Armani and Louis Vuitton, and how their work has evolved over the years, and even what impact this designers have had in the way we dress nowadays. But truly the most interesting fact was seeing how clothes has evolved as a whole, there were periods where the priority was using the most luxurious items possible or some that only cared for comfort or emphasizing the wearers figure. There was a special exhibit about Paris, its main designers, its culture and why over centuries it has been considered the city of fashion. I learned in this exhibit that while Paris was the best place to buy clothes for woman, London was the best place to get a tailored suit. I found the museum overall very exiting, there was a lot of things made by FIT students that were in between the exhibits, which was a very nice way to validate their hard work. I would truly recommend this museum to anyone interested in fashion or the history of clothes.

Weekly Reflection #5

Hello everyone,

This week at class we did more prep for the monologues that we’ll be presenting in the upcoming weeks. We also discussed the registration process for next semester. We received advice such as which classes are highly recommended or suggested so that we are on a good track for graduation. I found this to be helpful because this will be the first time I’ll be making my own schedule. The only worries I have is accidentally signing up for a class that won’t count for credits because I already satisfied the requirement or not liking my classes. Therefore, I will likely meet with an adviser to ask any questions.

I decided to tackle the academic workshop this time, and I chose to go to the Museum of Mathematics on 26th Street. The thing I hate the most in the world is Math, but the museum was also the closest thing to school and ended up being pretty interesting. At first, the museum really does have a childish vibe to it but it evens out as you go on. Many things caught my eye the second I walked in and bought my ticket, such as the tricycle in the center of the very small museum which had square wheels and ran on a triangular track. The museum took very simple concepts of math such as the aforementioned shapes and made them interesting and childish activities. Another interesting thing at the museum was an exhibit called the “String Product”, which is a ginormous polygraph (pictured below with my head) that lights up and meets at the product of any two numbers you can fathom within its spectrum. It was an eye-grabbing and unique piece that showcased the wide limitations of math. All in all, the Museum of Mathematics is not as repelling as it sounds. It is actually a great concept and piece that lets you grasp the idea of something you hate and makes it cool and fun. I definitely recommend going here and letting your inner child (or nerd) out.

Enrichment Workshop #2

For my second Enrichment /=Workshop I went to a Baruch women’s volleyball game! My friends and I took a bus to Jersey City, New Jersey to watch this epic match. Our girls played Wilkes University! This match was so exciting! We arrived early and got great seats. Baruch breezed through the competition, it was if we were watching toddlers play olympians.

Being here and watching these amazing athletes was somewhat nostalgic for me. I had played volleyball for two years. Those two years were some of the best high school memories I have to date. I remember training like if it were yesterday. I devoted so much of my time to volleyball my parents questioned if it even was healthy to be practicing that long. I would show up early and leave an hour later. My coaches gave me one-on-one attention because I cared so much about my team, improving, and ultimately winning. I excelled immensely and moved to varsity setter my sophomore year of high school. Also, my teammates voted me team captain, all while being a sophomore. I would’ve loved to see where I could’ve gone with my athletic career, but my mother was struggling in our family business so I had to quit to help her.

Despite these melancholic, nostalgic thoughts. I was entranced to be watching a volleyball game again. I have not seen a game since the last time I played. It was glorious. It was great to see the team that I support win. The crowd was small, but we were mighty. We supported our Bearcats to victory. After the game my friends and I hopped on another bus to go back into the city.

This experience was great! I enjoyed the sportsmanship, the game, the friends, the excitement, the nostalgia, and the New Jersey experience.

I am in the E-Sports Association which I joined since I like playing games. The people there are very interesting and cool and its fun talking to people I share an interest with. They have a variety of games that we can play such as Minecraft, Super Smash Brothers, and League of Legends along with many other games. You also don’t have to play competitive, even casual players can join their activities like me. I have also been to some of their events, including the league of legends workshop and the Super Smash Brothers Ultimate Tourney.

Sadly, in the Smash Tournament I lost the first round and was placed in the losers bracket where I lost the second round of that.  However afterwards I stayed in order to watch the others and play a few other rounds which I won most of(Wish I did that well in the tournament, but oh well). I also played a game of League of Legends in between some of my free matches which I lost after two players left early in the game. I watched the finals between Reilly and Justin Joseph, which Reilly won. There was also lotteries from time to time but I didn’t win those either sadly.

I also went to the League of Legends Workshop which helped learn how to play the game better. I t had really helpful tips and I hope to play the game more since I had taken a long break. Incidentally, my username is Shirogami Kuro if anyone wants to send a friend request. I recently won a game and was able to get a new rune page for my champions. The E-sports is not only fun but also helps me get better at these games and I will continue to join them in their activities,
