I find it very interesting how elements related to fish and marine are usually central elements in most Japanese art, where viewers can easily identify the cultural background of the artwork. Kuniyoshi has a blend of both Japanese and Western elements in this art. I like how he has a unique style in his portrait paintings with muted colors and touches of brighter red, and yellow.

I thought it was so interesting how his palette of preferred colors stayed mostly the same for a long time, then it exploded with lots of additional colors near the end of his career. I wonder what made him change, and what made him keep to the same palette for such a long time?

I agree! Fish and marine themes are a big part of Japanese art, making it easy to see its cultural roots. Kuniyoshi’s mix of Japanese and Western styles, with his soft colors and hints of bright red and yellow, gives his work a unique and memorable look.
