Almost a fifth of Czech inhabitants work for less than $3.70/hour. Those people are referred to as „the working poor“. In this documentary film by Apolena Rychlíková, reporter Saša Uhlová takes on some of the worst paid jobs to expose the working conditions in today’s Czech Republic. She spent a few weeks in a hospital laundry services, in a poultry processing plant, behind a supermarket cash desk and in a waste recycling plant. Her experience served as a base for very personal newspaper articles about the invisible employees who work in horrible conditions. Apolena Rychlíková uses them to make a documentary film composed of scenes shot in Uhlová’s own home and during her time at work. The film not only shows the reality of working in these places, but also how Uhlová dealt with the duties of her new jobs, changes of environment, bad working conditions and separation from her family. By combining collected material, Rychlíková made an hour-long film for Český žurnál series called The Limits of Work.
