GREAT WOMEN ARTISTS: Renaissance to Enlightenment
Join Luisa Maria MacCormack as we travel from the Renaissance to the Enlightenment, exploring the Great Women Artists of the Western Canon.
Did you know that of the thousands of paintings on display at the National Gallery, only 20 were created by women? Did you know that only around 5% of the work major permanent collections worldwide is by women artists? Did you know that on average Less than 5% of the artists in permanent collection’s modern art sections are women, but 85% of the nudes are female? Can you name five female artists who lived before the twentieth century? Can you answer Linda Nochlin’s infamous question; WHY HAVE THERE BEEN NO GREAT WOMEN ARTISTS?
If not, its hardly surprising, the narratives of female artist have long been passed over by the patriarchal powers that be in favour of male perspectives, but this erasure was not complete, and this session aims to shine a light on the incredible female artists working in the western canon from the Renaissance to the Enlightenment.
We will discuss their lives, immerse ourselves in their works, explore the battles and prejudices they faced and how their artwork is being slowly resurrected to act as a symbol for the contemporary feminist movement.
This event is free but requires registration.
