The last two years have seen a rise in uncertainty and anxiety in much of Asia, as long-standing assumptions about regional security have been called into question. Meanwhile, two ideas are gaining traction: the “Free and Open Indo-Pacific” (FOIP) and the Quadrilateral Security Dialogues (the “Quad”) — made up of Australia, India, Japan, and the U.S. Both ideas are generally credited to Prime Minister Shinzo Abe, with the Quad first raised in his vision for Japan in 2006, and the FOIP first used in his speech to the Indian parliament in 2007. Both ideas may alter the geopolitical order of the region, and shape the nature of U.S. engagement with more than half the world’s population.

Join us for a discussion with Asia Society Policy Institute Vice President Daniel Russel and two special guests from Asia with intimate experience at the highest levels of their respective government’s foreign policy establishments. The Hon. Subrahmanyam Jaishankar, former foreign secretary of India, and the Hon. Akitaka Saiki, former vice minister for foreign affairs of Japan, will share their perspectives on the FOIP and the Quad, and what the future holds for the region. Reception to follow.
