I kept thinking about fusion cuisine, while hearing how Kuniyoshi took Western subjects and incorporated Japanese treatments. If there’s fusion cuisine, why not fusion art? I particularly liked the side-by-side comparisons of the same subject, from a Western artist and then from Kuniyoshi’s treatment.
For anyone who’s interested, in the first year of this series we had a talk about a Song dynasty-era Chinese scroll landscape painting, and a lot of the elements in Kuniyoshi’s paintings remind me of those scrolls. Happy to share that recording if anyone wants to see it.
