Grading Scale for Online Work

Every Thursday, you’ll post on our course site or do other online work. I usually assign this in Tuesday’s class, and it’s almost always related to that day’s reading. It’s due by midnight on Thursday. At the end of the semester, you’ll get a grade for this online component, which is 20 percent of your total grade. Each week, you can get 1-4 points:

You get 4 points for:

Demonstrating depth of thought and excellent engagement with the material.
Referring to specific aspects of the readings and drawing strong and insightful conclusions from these references.
Drawing meaningful connections between the assigned readings and other readings or themes we’ve covered in class.
Excellent writing and overall clarity of the work.

You get 3 points for:

Demonstrating depth of thought and good engagement with the material.
Referring to specific aspects of the readings and drawing good conclusions from these references.
Drawing connections between the assigned reading and other readings or themes we’ve covered in class that have potential but need further thought.
Good writing and overall clarity of the work

You get 2 points for:

Demonstrating some depth of thought and reasonable engagement with the material.
Referring to specific aspects of the readings but failing to draw strong conclusions from these references.
Drawing few or weak connections between the assigned reading and other readings or themes we’ve covered in class.
Reasonable writing and overall clarity of the work.

You get 1 point for:

Demonstrating minimal depth of thought and little or shallow engagement with the material.
Referring minimally or cursorily to specific aspects of the readings and drawing no or hardly any conclusions from these references.
Drawing no or minimal connections between the assigned reading and other readings or themes we’ve covered in class.
Poor writing and overall clarity of the work.

You get 0 points if you don’t complete the work and didn’t take an SO day.
