NOAA Hollings Undergraduate Scholarship Program

The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) Ernest F. Hollings Scholarship Program

Scholarship Goals:

  1. increase undergraduate training in oceanic and atmospheric science research, technology, and education and foster multidisciplinary teaching opportunities
  2. increase public understanding and support for stewardship of the ocean and atmosphere and improve environmental literacy
  3. recruit and prepare students for public service careers with NOAA and other government supported natural resource and sciences agencies
  4. recruit and prepare students for careers as teachers and educators in oceanic and atmospheric sciences and to improve scientific and environmental education in the United States

Scholarship eligbility:  An applicant for the Hollings scholarship must

  1. be a U.S. citizen
  2. be currently enrolled or accepted as a full-time 2nd year student in a four year academic program or a full-time 3rd year student in a five year undergraduate program at an accredited college or university within the United States or its territories
  3. earn and maintain a 3.0 GPA on a 4.0 scale in all completed courses each term as well as maintain a 3.0 cumulative GPA in the major.  The grade point average requirement applies for every semester or quarter, cumulative and in the major field prior to and at the end of the time of application for the scholarship, for the period between application and award notification and after distribution of funds
  4. have a maintain a declared major in a discipline, including but not limited to oceanic, environmental, biological, and atmospheric sciences, mathematics, engineering, remotes sensing technology,  physical and social sciences, including geography, physics, hydrology, geomatics, or teacher education that support NOAA programs and mission.

Components of the Scholarship Program:  The Hollings Scholarship Program provides the following benefits:

  1. assistance up to a maximum of $8,000 per year for full-time study during the 9-month academic year
  2. A 10 week, full-time internship position ($650/week) during the summer at a NOAA facility
  3. If reappointed, assistance up to a maximum of $8,000 for full-time study during  a second 9-month academic year
  4. Travel funds are also provided to enable scholarship recipients to attend a mandatory NOAA Scholarship Program orientation, conferences where students present a paper or poster and a housing subsidy for those who do not reside at home during the summer internship.

Application Process:

  1. To apply for a Hollings Undergraduate Scholarship, applicants can download an application at https://oedwebapps.iso.noaa.gov/uspa
  2. The application is available annually September through January.
  3. The application deadline is in early January.
  4. Applicants must submit a completed scholarship application form. two essays, official college transcripts from all institutions attended sent directly to NOAA by the institutions and two academic references
