Northern Manhattan Parks – Community Development Intern Positions (2)
UNIT DESCRIPTION:
Located at the top of Manhattan and overlooking the Hudson River, Fort Tryon Park is home to unique architectural and horticultural treasures, and hosts an ongoing array of recreational, cultural and arts programs for visitors from the diverse and vibrant surrounding community and throughout New York City and beyond. Park highlights include the Heather Garden, the Olmsted-Brothers designed Alpine Garden, and the Cloisters Museum, a branch of the Metropolitan Museum of Art, which features one of the finest collections of Medieval Art. The park organizes over 300 programs and events over the course of the year, ranging from Nature Adventures for Kids to Scandia Symphony Concerts, dance workshops, fundraisers, historic reenactments and fitness programs. NYC Parks’ non-profit partner, the Fort Tryon Park Trust, works to promote the restoration, preservation, and enhancement of this historic and scenic landmark for the benefit and use of the surrounding community and all New Yorkers.
INTERN RESPONSIBILITIES:
Fort Tryon Park is seeking a Community Development Intern to help manage public outreach and community relations. This internship includes both administrative office work and outdoor work at events. The Intern will work 8-10 hours a week with some flexibility based on events/class schedules.
Responsibilities:
- Coordinate with Trust development staff and NYC Parks Administrator to strengthen community relations by providing key information to the neighborhood and region
- Help develop content for outreach materials
- Help manage social media outlets to help extend Trust and Northern Manhattan Parks impact
- Assist with the development of promotional materials, graphics, e-newsletters, etc.
- Respond to visitor inquiries about Fort Tryon, Northern Manhattan Park events, activities and improvements.
- Facilitate Fort Tryon Park Trust membership through event participants
- Other special projects as assigned
QUALIFICATIONS/SPECIAL SKILLS/AREAS OF INTEREST:
- Detail oriented, strong organizational skills
- Excellent communications skills
- Outgoing personality and ability to interact with diverse audiences and park staff
- Spanish language skills helpful but not required
- Interest in environmental studies, community development, urban planning, public policy or a related field helpful but not required
