Seeking a Research Assistant
Roseanne McManus, an Assistant Professor in the Political Science Department at Baruch College, is seeking a paid undergraduate research assistant for the fall semester, possibly extending into January and the spring semester. The substantive focus of the research is on international security, particularly the role of statements of resolve in international conflict. The first main task that needs to be done is splitting up large text files of statements into smaller files by date. The second main task is splitting up statement text files by context. Additional tasks might also be required. None of these tasks require skills beyond basic familiarity with computers and word processing software, and training on specific procedures will be provided. However, the work does require a high degree of accuracy and attention to detail as well as self-motivation.
The position pays $10.50 an hour. It would look good on the resume of any student who is interested in a career in a research-oriented field, graduate school, or law school. The position will also provide the opportunity to work closely with a faculty member and learn how research works. The research tasks are honestly not exciting in themselves, but they contribute to larger projects that are expected to result in publications. Funding is available for 95 hours of work, most of which should be completed in the fall semester. The exact hours for accomplishing the work are very flexible and can be discussed during interviews.
To apply, please send an email to Professor Roseanne McManus at [email protected] no later than September 5. Please include (1) an unofficial transcript/student record, (2) your resume, (3) a few paragraphs about why you want this position and believe you would be a good fit for it. Any questions can also be addressed to [email protected]
