LIFT’s mission is to help families in our community achieve economic stability and well-being. We are working to establish a new standard for holistic and enduring solutions in our country’s fight against poverty.
What We Do
We pair rigorously trained Advocates with committed community members to build the strong personal, social and financial foundations they need to get ahead. By setting their own goals and working hard to achieve them, LIFT Members are equipped to get a job, a safe home and quality education for themselves and their kids. They also build a support network, confidence in what they bring to the table and the skills to manage tough times in the future.
About the Position
LIFT seeks driven and independent leaders to serve as Advocates. In this volunteer role, Advocates will have the opportunity to make a positive impact in the lives of community members while learning about local domestic poverty issues. LIFT Advocates work one-on-one with low-income families (i.e. LIFT members) to find jobs, secure housing, enroll in public benefits, and obtain referrals for services like childcare and healthcare. We look for individuals who are passionate about community development and are committed to LIFT’s anti-poverty mission.
How LIFT Advocates have impacted community members:
- In 2014, Advocates helped members fill out 920 job applications,
- Successfully referred 220 members to receive additional services, and
- Since LIFT’s founding in 1998, over 12,000 Advocates have served more than 100,000 members nationally
Responsibilities:
- Work one-on-one with low-income community members to find jobs, secure safe and stable housing, enroll in public benefits and tax credits, and obtain referrals for services like childcare and healthcare
- Attend meetings and trainings that address local and national poverty issues
- Engage the community by building and strengthening partnerships with community organizations
- Support the management of daily office operations
Requirements:
- Commitment to LIFT’s mission and core values
- Proficiency in Spanish
- Strong leadership and interpersonal skills
- Flexibility, ability to take initiative, and make a commitment

Key Details:
- Training: All Advocates will participate in a mandatory, pre-service training at the beginning of their term to become familiar with LIFT’s approach to Member Service and resources in the Bronx area. Training will take place on Friday, Jan. 29th and Saturday, Jan. 30th.
- Hours: Advocates must be able to work a minimum of 8 hours per week during one or multiple of the shift options below.
- Shift options: Monday, Tuesday, and Wednesday, 10:45 am – 5:00 pm, 10:45 am – 7:30 pm, or 12:45 pm – 7:30 pm and Thurs 9:15 am – 12:30 pm, 9:15 am – 5:30 pm, or 12:45 pm – 5:30 pm.
- Compensation: Advocate positions are unpaid
