Students will learn what it takes to run for elected office in the US, specifically by studying why candidates decide to run for office and how they build effective campaign operations. The class will rely heavily on the ongoing 2016 presidential race as well as past campaigns as case studies for our lessons. In addition to class lectures, the course will consist of regular seminars with guest speakers from New York City and State politics in wide-ranging, candid discussions for an inside look at their campaigns and to hear what they have learned throughout their political careers. (Last semester’s class had visits by NY Assemblyman Michael Blake from the Bronx, Suffolk County Executive Steve Bellone, and many political strategists.)
If you’re passionate about politics, this class is for you. If you’re fascinated by the presidential race and ongoing spectacle of the debates, this class is for you. And, most importantly, if you hope to work on political campaigns—or even run for office yourself one day—this class is for you. You will learn valuable political strategies, practical communications methods, and successful advocacy techniques by hearing from those who have been a part of the process. If you have any questions about the class, you can email Professor DeSena at [email protected].
