CUNY Becas 2016

The CUNY Becas scholarship program, offered by the Jaime Lucero Mexican StudiesInstitutes at CUNY, offers full tuition scholarships to CUNY undergraduate and graduate students who meet three criteria: academic excellence, financial need, and commitment to service in the Mexican community. The scholarship can only be used for tuition and it covers one year for undergraduate degree students, or one semester for graduate students. Past recipients may reapply for additional funding. The scholarship primarily aids students with little or no access to other funding sources and does not discriminate based on immigration status or nationality.

Eligibility Requirements:

  • Academic excellence
  • Financial need
  • Commitment to service in the Mexican community.

Application Materials:

  • Completed application form
  • Most recent transcript
  • A letter of recommendation and recommendation form (submitted by recommender)
  • Two short essays of one-page max each
  1. A personal statement with attention to your community service within the Mexican community. If you have not had the experience of working with the Mexican community, you may write about how the scholarship will allow you to have this experience.
  2. A statement of financial need that explains how you would benefit from being awarded CUNY Becas. If applicable, discuss any unusual personal or family circumstances.

Scholarship Conditions:
For undergraduate students, the scholarship will be disbursed to the recipient’s CUNY campus in two equal installments over the Fall 2016 and Spring 2017 semesters. For graduate students, the scholarship will be disbursed to the recipient’s CUNY campus in one full installment. Failure to comply with the following conditions may result in the suspension or revocation of scholarship awards:

  • Full-time enrollment at a CUNY school
  • Participation in monthly seminars
  • Completion of a 200 hour internship in an affiliated nonprofit institution
  • Submission of semester academic progress report
  • Continuous involvement with the Institute and Becari@s network in events and activities

* Workshops and Drop-in Assistance are available to assist applicants in preparing strong application packages. Please visit our website for more details: www.lehman.cuny.edu/mexican-studies

All applications must be submitted electronically at www.lehman.cuny.edu/mexican-studies. Both, the personal statement and the statement of financial need are uploaded to the application form.
The recommendation form is available on our website and must filled out by the recommender. The letter of recommendation is uploaded onto the recommender form.

DEADLINE is February 29, 2016. Any documents received after this date will be disqualified.
