nick jonas article

The Comopolitan  article Nick Jonas Confirms that Taylor Swift Throws the Best Parties by Eliza Thompson describes the “new” Nick Jonas. Because of the title, you may assume it’s an article about Taylor Swift’s parties but it is actually saying how Nick Jonas has become a celebrity “who matters” according to Thompson. Nick Jonas has started to openly embrace his gay fans by portraying gay characters in shows such as Kingdom and performing in gay clubs. His portrayal of the gay MMA fighter in Kingdom has gotten a lot of appreciation from his gay audience as well as his friends. Thompson wraps up the article with a tidbit about Jonas’s past. He brings up that he used to smoke pot “elsewhere” and that he felt bad for treating his ,presumably, ex-girlfriends. Due a large female fanbase, Jonas kept his girlfriends private and that may have hurt some people.

Does Fashion Have A Specific Image?

Imagine sitting front row of NYC Fashion Week or the Victoria’s Secret Fashion Show. The models walking down these runways appear to be flawless and glamourous. Thin, curvy, and free of blemishes are only a few ways to describe these women. These traits are exactly what many women lust over. The question at hand is: should there be more diversity in the looks of women?

Specifically, watching the Victoria’s Secret Fashion Show, the models walk down the runway in majority lingerie, which seems to fit them as if it was made just for them. Watching this show for years, I have always dreamed of looking like models such as Miranda Kerr or Adriana Lima, who are just two of the famous Victoria’s Secret Angels.

The Victoria’s Secret lingerie lines are not made to comply with every body type. The panties at these stores only go up to an XL, which is only a size 16. The bras have some styles which go up to a size DDD, while others only stop at size D.

Recently, a petition has been proposed on Change.org to persuade the lingerie company to expand their sizes to suit the needs of larger women. They believe that Victoria’s Secret should include bigger sizes in both lingerie and models. Dana Drew, the woman who began this petition which already has 750 signatures, has stated, “My money and my credit are good enough for them, but the fact that I can only buy items like perfume, lotion, and body spray sends the message that my body is not. Every year I watch the Angel Fashion Show and would love to purchase the items I see on my screen but can’t because Victoria’s Secret doesn’t sell plus sizes.”

When asking a representative from Victoria’s Secret about their view on the petition, they had no comment to give us at the time. It is not clear whether or not this lingerie company will comply with the demands of the petition. Until then, women will just have to continue to watch this fashion show full of “Angels” and hope for a change.

Nick Jonas Article

This article comes from Cosmopolitan Magazine with the seemingly intended purpose of encouraging readers to see Nick Jonas in a favorable light. Within the article, Jonas discusses how since working with Disney channel, he has sought to create a new image for himself by doing things like embracing his gay fans. Although he expresses how he was initially skeptical about taking such strides with his fan base, Jonas says he is glad to have done so. In addition to painting Jonas as a positive character, the article also highlighted Jonas’s claim that Taylor Swift throws the best parties in the music industry. Mainly, the author used puns which referenced a Taylor Swift song, and also threw in some personal opinions on Jonas, especially in relation to his physical appearance.

Careless Decisions, Severe Impacts
In the current era of technology and social media, it has become difficult for celebrities to hold any aspect of secrecy in their lives. This holds that when celebrities, specifically football players, run in with the law, the event becomes the talk of the town, or in this case, the entire country. Leading up to the National Football League’s 2014-2015 season, the NFL has come under heavy scrutiny after upwards of 100 players were arrested since the year 2012. The NFL responded by recording an added 52 incidents throughout 2014. (USA Today, NFL PLAYER ARRESTS) The arrests vary in significance; some are simply laughable, such as Dallas Cowboys running back Joseph Randle, who was caught stealing women’s underwear from department stores. Yet some were eerily serious such as former Kansas City Chiefs linebacker Jovan Belcher, who was cited for a murdering his girlfriend before ultimately committing suicide; casting a cloud over the NFL for its lack of attention to the effects of head trauma.
The reality is no matter the offense, the impact is dramatically tarnishing of the NFL’s image, let alone those who are impacted by it. As the dominant sport in the country, American Football and especially the NFL are looked upon to instill discipline, leadership, and respect into the youth, particularly the less-privileged. However, these events of civil disobedience send an amplified message to those who rely on the NFL, one that implies being above the law. Not only is this notion clearly untrue as obvious by the mass of player arrests, but the harsh reality is many of these kids will not make it to the professional sports level; forcing them to use their un-sharpened social skills in real world institutions.
In an effort to ‘stop the bleeding,’ the NFL has taken some effort to repair relations with its followers. For example, the NFL recently collaborated with the organization NO MORE which advocates against domestic violence, another one of the NFL’s major issues. However in the few short days of 2015, the results seem nonexistent as nine more arrests have been reported.

Group A Description Post Colleen

“Why You Shouldn’t Be Terrified of This Never-Ending Stew” is an article written by Justine Sterling featured in the publication Food & Wine: Inspiration Served Daily. Through the use of personification, Sterling first introduces the main topic of the article: Luoro’s diverse and multi-dimensional stew (“affectionately” named Stu.) The author then discloses that the secret ingredient to Luoro’s Twitter-famous dish in simply “kitchen scraps” (vegetable peels, fish heads, shrimp shells, chiecken carcasses, water and other edibles) because Chef Santos is anti-foodwaste. By using a metaphor, Sterling culminates his exposure of this stew by comparing it to the flu-shot, though disclaiming the claim’s lack of scientific evidence.

A Good Magazine Short

A specific object

(a concrete event- i.e. Snapchat is going to host a Superheros series; a quirky object; an upcoming person of note; a burgeoning fad).

It’s about Nick Jonas, but it’s not;  it’s specifically about highlighting recent signs that he is being embraced outside his Disney persona); it’s perhaps about suggesting that he is going to keep rising in success.

It’s not about promoting Chef Santos or even about his restaurant, Louro (but notice there’s a link to the restaurant and more mention of the menu).  It’s specifically about this curious 5 month simmering stew.   It certainly advertises the chef and the dining establishment, but those are technically secondary effects of the article.

A mix of strategies

Good shorts incorporate a mix of rhetorical device.  They’re not all quotes (that would be like an interview).  They’re not all background (that would be like a Wikipedia article or a news brief).  They’re not totally (if at all) evaluative (that would be a review).  They’re not all pictures or all links or all metaphor or all data . . ..

Informative

shorts tend to educate us about something in particular.  They don’t necessarily weigh huge debates or give one person’s opinion.  They tend to play on the fact that you have some general interest (in the topic of the magazine) and are predisposed to want to know a bit more about what this headline announces.

Informative but Catchy Titles

the titles for shorts aren’t usually just poetic or great puns.  They’re marketed to readers who are skimming or moving quickly.  These readers kind of want to have the gist of what they are getting into before they start.  The title has to convey a lot of information while still managing to be punchy.

Little Personal Opinion

These are not Op Eds.  There might be some line about how “we love” certain tweets or light-hearted conjectures about how looking at Jonas will be enough to make any girl previously hurt feel better.  But these are strategic moments of kind of rubbing elbows with the reader and establishing a connection.  The assumption is that the reader thinks the same.   The whole article though while typically enthusiastic is not about the author’s opinion or evaluative review of this object.

A Few Different Devices for Writing a Short

quotes and excerpts from interviews

visuals

links to sources and background reference piece.

expert reports (for data and recent findings)

quick and easily digestible metaphors

Clear comparisons

references to social media and how the object stands in terms of popular notice

pointing out extremes, absurdities, and sensational details

pithy remarks, puns, or other forms of quickly consumable humor

The never ending stu

A stew namely stu is prepared to entice your taste buds. This stu is made from food scraps in efforts to conserve food and bring something new to the table. It also has health benefits because boiling these left over food for a longer time helps draw out the nutrients from the food scraps into the broth. Never fear, no one has gotten sick from this so far and although it wasnt scientifically proven but it was said to be better than an annual flu shot.
