In the article “Why You Shouldn’t Be Terrified of This Never-Ending Stew” Justine Sterling, Editor at Food &Wine, describes the unique perpetual stew named “Stu” which is key to what makes Louro Restaurant different from other restaurants in New York City. Stu was created last August using only kitchen scraps and is now being fed “fish heads, shrimp shells [and] chicken carcasses.” The chef of the restaurant, David Santos, believes that nothing should go to waste and from that belief the ideas was born of a never-ending stew that would prevent bacteria from ever forming while also serving as a crucial piece to the many different dishes served in this restaurant. This stew is used in a variety of different dishes ranging from the popular garlic soup to duck ramen. For chef Santos, Stu is “ever-evolving” and it is beneficial for everyone because of its stew’s ability to absorb every vitamin and mineral from a marrow of what was left of a chicken carcass.
Stu: The Never-Ending Stew
Justine Sterling, the associate digital editor at Food and Wine Magazine, sings her praises for Stu, the never-ending stew at restaurant Louro, in New York City. Stu has gained popularity on twitter with several followers tracking what he eats everyday. He is the brainchild of Chef Santos, created in order to reduce food waste at the restaurant. Stu is fed food scraps like lobster shells, chicken bones, beef trimmings, vegetable peels and other remnants that would otherwise go in the trash. And while Stu was conceived five months ago, Sterling reassures us that there is no reason to fear Stu, he is perfectly up to health code standards and may even do us all some good, so we should all indulge in a bowl.
Sterling brings us to trust the stew by personifying it, which allows us to find it sort of endearing. It helps Stu become trendy, and inspires more people to taste the broth. Sterling also relies on the fact that because Stu is constantly simmering and periodically strained, he hasn’t been able to acquire bacteria, even though he has been boiling for nearly half a year. Finally, she quotes the personal observation of those whom have tried Stu and claim that the long stewing process has permitted all the nutrients to be soaked out of the scraps creating a vitamin rich broth that may be the reason none of the chefs have gotten sick this year. The chef even believes that Stu may be more effective in helping maintain good health than the flu shot.
Sterling’s intention in providing this testimony and, revealing the production process behind Stu, combined with the method of turning the stew into a playful caricature, is to eliminate all notions of Stu being dangerous, unsanitary or otherwise threatening. Stu is helpful, healthy, and conscientious in preventing waste; therefore, rather than fearing him everyone should just head to Louro and give him a chance.

Alongside SnapperHero, the Discover feature a collection of content from various Snapchat partners including CNN, and ESPN is also planning it’s launch.
In this piece Lucas Shaw details the different ways companies are trying to capitalize on Snapchat’s recent and unexpected success by developing new forms of media, tailored to match the platform’s “ephemeral messaging”. To develop this point Shaw indicates that the app is incredibly popular among teenagers with 700 million photos being sent everyday and currently valued at 10 billion dollars. Shaw also includes information about executives talking about taking chances with new ideas to try to captivate some of the audience that uses Snapchat, explicitly stating the platform is so new, executives don’t know how to market things or what content to add.

STU
At Louro restaurant in New York City, Stu continues to simmer in the kitchen, patiently waiting for various additions. The rich broth is developed with many different flavor elements, “everything from kabocha squash to beef trimmings to lobster shells” (Sterling, ” Why You Shouldn’t Be Terrified of This Never-Ending Stew”). Nicknamed the “Perpetual Stew,” Chef David Santos’ creation has been simmering for five months after his desire to limit food wastes. Chef Santos boasts his stew’s ample health benefits, noting that its prolonged simmering fully extracts vitamins and minerals from its ingredients (Sterling, ” Why You Shouldn’t Be Terrified of This Never-Ending Stew”).
The editor, Justine Sterling, effectively grabs the readers attention by depicting the stew’s personification as an individual that tweets often and holds taste preferences. After a brief description, Sterling mentions that kitchen scraps are constantly added to the same pot which has been simmering for five months; a characteristic which may turn customers away. However, she immediately reassures the critics by noting that bacteria cannot develop because the stew is constantly exposed to heat. Furthermore, she invites the reader to try the stew, mentioning that it can be purchased in two unique flavor options. Finally, Sterling leaves the reader with yet another piece of goodwill by featuring Chef Santos’ self renowned health benefits of the stew.
Stu gained recognition through its feature on the acclaimed Food&Wine website. Food&Wine brings to light many of the trending food, drink, and restaurant experiences from many different cuisines. This particular piece was added to the website’s “restaurant intel” column which highlights the Portuguese inspired restaurant as a whole, starting with the now famous Stu!

Why You Shouldn’t Be Terrified of This Never-Ending Stew
This article in the Food & Wine Magazine published by Time Inc. discuses the reason why a special type of stew shouldn’t frighten people. The writer begins the short by describing the stew as a person and even calling it by its given name, Stu. Stu likes to eat a lot ranging from kabocha squash to lobster shells and has been cooking for five months. This shows the reader that this isn’t just any ordinary type of stew, but that it takes effort and time to make Stu. Last August, David Santos, a chef at New York City’s Portuguese-influenced Louro Restaurant, decided to make a broth using kitchen leftovers. However, this shouldn’t be terrifying because the broth is constantly cooked and strained so that bacteria cannot grow. It is the base for some of the restaurant’s most popular dishes and it can also be flavored either Japanese-style or Portuguese-style. Stu is indeed popular and has a flavor that fits well with the dishes from the restaurant. Furthermore, the chef chooses to avoid wasting food and thus uses ingredients like mixed vegetable peels, fish heads, shrimp shells, chicken carcasses, and other nourishments. These ingredients offer many health benefits and it is said that the kitchen staff has a pint of stew daily and none of them have gotten sick this year. This shows the reader that this never-ending-stew is very important not only because of the benefits but because of how it lays down the foundation for many of the dishes in this restaurant.
Description Post (Group C)
This piece is an online article from the Cosmopolitan magazine. The article itself was very brief, and was titled, “Nick Jonas Confirms That Taylor Swift Throws the Best Parties.” The title suggests that the article will mainly focus on that topic, when in reality the main focus of the article is Nick Jonas’ recent “renaissance” back into the spotlight of pop culture. There are three paragraphs in total. The first paragraph describes how Jonas reentered the spotlight with a new song, and his good looks. The author then goes on to discuss an interview Jonas partook in with Rolling Stone magazine, about Taylor Swift’s birthday party, and the many celebrities that were there. The second paragraph addresses Nick’s new embrace of the gay community, and how he has interacted with his gay fandom by preforming at gay bars, and portraying a gay character on the television show Kingdom. Lastly, the third paragraph includes talk about Nick’s past involvement with Disney. It is stated that he had tried smoking pot, and was forced to be secretive about relationships with woman during this time, but does not many any direct references to Disney. The overall purpose of this article is to highlight Nick Jonas’ recent comeback, and prove that it will continue in the new year. The author does this by discussing recent events, and providing links to articles that cover the stories in greater detail.
