In the article “Reveal or Conceal? American Religious Discourse With Fashion” the author discusses the sociological trend of changes in American religion that are having a profound impact on consumer culture. She admits there is a link between the religious discourse on modesty and its possible appeal in non-religious settings. Then she states that if the consumer demand is there, designers, producers, and retailers of fashion will need to consider modest fashion as an important component of America’s appearance and clothing choice.

This journal starts off with a description of a woman coming home, and reading a magazine. It then goes into how advertising and media can take the reader away, and have the reader so involved in the reading. The journal then goes into saying how it will talk about an “aesthetic theory to identify a par- ticular kind of advertising imagery, readily found in the fashion domain, labeled the grotesque.” (Phillips 368.) The journal then goes into brands, advertising, aesthetics, consumers and persuasion. The journal also has images from previous advertisements for brands involved with fashion, like Jimmy Choo (374) and Versace (375).
Friedman, Vanessa. “For Michelle Obama, Girlie Clothes That Lean In.” The New York Times. The New York Times, 24 Mar. 2015. Web. 25 Mar. 2015.
This article talks about Michelle Obama’s clothing on her trip to Cambodia and Vietnam, on her trip for “Let Girls Learn”. The author talks about how she thinks a way a woman dresses is a way of sending a message about her identity. It also mentions how a pantsuit, like something Hilary Clinton would wear, sends a message identifying her as successful. The article, at one point, focuses on how her outfits varied by designer, ethnicity of designer and even gender of the designer. Friedman puts in her own opinion, stating whether or not the First Lady should have worn all products from female designers, especially because she was promoting female achievements. She does not wear everything from the United States, which is unlike most First Ladies. They were also not all Asian, which is different, because most First Ladies would wear something from the country or the country’s designer to seem more friendly. The only message her wardrobe sent, was that her whole wardrobe was girly. When Cecile Duflot wore a floral dress, people whistled and cat called to her. Michelle Obama’s girly clothing was to show that you can be girly, and still be successful, like get a PhD or a doctorates. “Homegirl may be wearing flowers but you know she can kick butt”.

Thesis
In the short story, “The Eclipse,” author Augusto Monterosso uses irony in order to mock the ignorant westerners. Monterroso demonstrates this at the end of the story when the priest is sacrificed despite his attempt to fool the natives using his talents and the knowledge of Aristotle, which highlights the misconceptions between the two societies.
Fashion Magazine Short
In the midst of controversies varying from a reported $1 million porn agreement to the performance at the MTV Video Music Awards that involved dancing teddy bears, a foam finger running along her body, a nude-colored bikini, and some twerking, American singer and actress Miley Cyrus is the subject of critique. Despite her performance, she has gained both condemnation and praise for her new appearance.
From Disney Princess Hannah Montana to LA teen icon, Cyrus has changed dramatically over the years. In 2006, when Hannah Montana premiered on Disney Channel, the then 13 year old wore lip-gloss and sparkly eyeliner. However, she has exchanged her cowboy boots and kid-style casual jeans for denim short-shorts and crop tops with a taste for studs and leather. These days nothing she wears shocks us- from her latex underwear and bra to even being nude. Ever since 2012, when Miley Cyrus first appeared with a platinum blonde pixie, her look has become progressively edgier. While some may say it isn’t Cyrus’s best look, it definitely caught everyone’s attention.
In an exclusive interview with Juidth Woods, Miley Cyrus states, “I’m trying to break out of that long hair, big boobs stereotype that women feel they have to conform to. I mean, we’re not living in the freakin’ 1950s – short hair is OK. Have people really got so little imagination? Every morning I look in the mirror and I feel like a blank canvas and I choose who I want to be. In a normal job you have to live by someone else’s rules, but I’m in a job where my work is play and I don’t have to pretend to be something I’m not.”
From her young and casual Hannah Montana days to her current edgy look, Cyrus continues to experiment with her style. She wants to make sure no one confuses her with the girl from Hannah Montana. Whether people like her new look or not, Miley Cyrus is growing up and taking fashion risks. She proudly tweets “I’ve never felt more like myself!”

3. CARVEN
Starring Marte Mei Van Haaster and Guerrino Santulliana by Viviane Sassen
Guillaume Henry took over the sleepy French brand Carven in 2009 as a relative unknown after stints at Givenchy and Paula Ka, rapidly transforming the 80-year-old label into a commercial hit in the contemporary market. With Carven now on the expansion path in Asia, Henry’s modern and liberated vision for the brand has also resulted in a spring/summer campaign that is rendered beautifully by Dutch artist and photographer Viviane Sassen, with whom Carven partnered for the fifth season in a row. This time around, Sassen translated her arresting out-of-focus technique to floating floral elements, lending the campaign a trademark surrealist touch.

Why You Shouldn’t Be Terrified of This Never-Ending Stew
This article in the Food & Wine Magazine published by Time Inc. discuses the reason why a special type of stew shouldn’t frighten people. The writer begins the short by describing the stew as a person and even calling it by its given name, Stu. Stu likes to eat a lot ranging from kabocha squash to lobster shells and has been cooking for five months. This shows the reader that this isn’t just any ordinary type of stew, but that it takes effort and time to make Stu. Last August, David Santos, a chef at New York City’s Portuguese-influenced Louro Restaurant, decided to make a broth using kitchen leftovers. However, this shouldn’t be terrifying because the broth is constantly cooked and strained so that bacteria cannot grow. It is the base for some of the restaurant’s most popular dishes and it can also be flavored either Japanese-style or Portuguese-style. Stu is indeed popular and has a flavor that fits well with the dishes from the restaurant. Furthermore, the chef chooses to avoid wasting food and thus uses ingredients like mixed vegetable peels, fish heads, shrimp shells, chicken carcasses, and other nourishments. These ingredients offer many health benefits and it is said that the kitchen staff has a pint of stew daily and none of them have gotten sick this year. This shows the reader that this never-ending-stew is very important not only because of the benefits but because of how it lays down the foundation for many of the dishes in this restaurant.
Message Board Description
As you walk across the Baruch hallways, you can’t help but notice the message board filled with flyers. There are eleven flyers on the board filled with information regarding internships, study abroad programs, club fair, tutoring, and etc. The flyers are educational and are aimed toward Baruch students. Most of them are colorful and eye catching with different font sizes and pictures illustrated. However, each one of the flyers has specific contact information, which includes the name of the event/club/person, phone number, room number, and the time and date.
The message board is a great way for students to inform their peers about the latest news and upcoming events. Since the message board is placed in the middle of the hallway, it is not only visible, but it is also accessible to all the students and staff members. The message board also happens to be black so the flyers are easy to spot and can be read clearly. Also, because of the large size of the board, it can hold a lot of flyers and posters at the same time, which is very convenient for the students.
