Final Project Analysis

For my final project I chose to do the Brochure. The theme for my brochure was Illicit Mind which is my company. I choose to do my company for this project because I knew that this would help me not only do well on the project but be able to used what I learned in the semester in real life.

As for the design aspect of the project I kept the layout very minimal with a lot of white space. Because I was providing clusters of information I wanted to make sure that this information was clear to read and didn’t overwhelm the reader. I used the typeface Trebuchet as my headlines, Bodoni Bold as sublines and Bodoni Book for my paragraphs. Using Bodoni with Trebuchet looked clean and they complimented each other very well. Within the paragraphs I made my font 14pt and my leading 15pt to give it a spacial look but also not too far apart.

This project taught me how I can use type to design something. Many times people drown things with images, movement and many other things to make it look exciting and interesting. Using the type to design now shows me that you can keep something simple and still get the same message across.

Overall I enjoyed this class and I also really enjoyed this project.

Illustrated Quote Analysis

Georgie-Ann Getton

I really enjoyed this project. Some of the reasons why are:

  • Real life application- I do social media marketing. I always have to put quotes on photos. Before I would use a very simple text to photo app and the photo would be “good enough to post”. Now after spending time to analyze the photo as well as the quote and allow them to complement each other as well as allowing the design to speak for itself not just using a typeface that speaks for the text
  • Endless Possibilities – This project really opened up my eye to the fact that the same photo and quote can look so many different ways and read so many ways based on the placement of it.

This was a very fun and engaging project. Although it wasn’t easy it was a huge learning and experimental lesson.

Hand Writing Analysis

Georgie-Ann Getton

For the hand writing project we had to select from Garamond, Baskerville, Bodini , Helvetica and Century Expanded and replicate the typeface with our name along with a descriptive word. This project was very difficult for me because I have never done anythig like this before. I had never used different shade pencils , drew on tracing paper or anything even close. Then also having to draw my name free hand brought on so much pressure because I had to just look at the text then try my best to replicate. It was very tempting to just trace my name none the less I stuck it out.

The typeface that I decided to use was Garamond. I just fell in love with this typeface the first time I saw it. The word that I got was Adorable. My text to replicate was “Georgie the adorable”. I spent hours trying to replicate the text and keep my sheet as clean as possible. The most difficult things about my text was the lower case “g” in my name. The “g” in Garamond is very specific. Also another thing that I struggled with was replicating the thick and thin relationship between the letter. I could visually see that the relationship was there but when I drew it , it ended up being thicker than it was supposed to be.

After the project was complete I knew that it needed to be a lot better but I was still very proud of my accomplishments and knew that this was just a step one. With future practice and more opportunities to create or replicate a pieces I know I will get better. I got to learn to appreciate letter contrasts and color contrasts when drawing text.

What is Graphic Design?

Georgie- Ann Getton

The article gave me a more descriptive view of what the possible daily tasks/jobs as graphic designer would have. Many people may not really think too deeply about the look of products but in actuality the appearance of a product and how to products design communicates with us is what gives us the incentives to make a purchase. I like the fact that the author was very descriptive about the titles of roles as you get better as a designer because I personally didn’t know what each level of design was referred to. Overall this article was very helpful to me and gave me a lot of clarity regarding to blank spaces I had in my mind about becoming a graphic designer.

My question to the author would be: Why do so many people who are not in the tech world not understand the value of a graphic designer?  I think the answer to this would simply be that graphic design reaches out more to ones subconscious than the conscious mind so they don’t see how huge the design of something has impacted them. Also Graphic design is thrown into the Art category and with so many business and medical focused students the Art students are not appreciated the way they should be.
