This project was definitely enjoyable and challenging. I had to think “outside the box” to create variations on my quote and photo. My quote was “a flower does not think of competing with the flower next to it. It just blooms,” and my photo was a single stemmed lotus. It was challenging to change up my ideas so it was not just a variation on a theme. This called for me moving my type and placing my image on different sides of the page as well as flipping my image. It was enjoyable to experiment with different fonts and colors to put emphasis on my quote as well as my image. I also had to make sure they were connected and did not look like text placed on top of an image. Overall, this project has helped me see how strong a simple text/image can make a message come across if it is placed together properly.

This project was challenging but fun. The quote I picked was “Better to reign in Hell, than to serve in Heaven. I chose this quote because it was bold, strong, and had good contrasting words. I thought the best typeface for this quote was Baskerville because the curves and serifs made it seem strong but not too modern or too soft.

I had a quote I liked as well as the typeface, but I was having a hard time deciding on an image that would really complete the package. Picking the image and formatting both elements was what made it a challenge. In the end I decided to pick something more abstract and simple. The triangle and contrasting colors I incorporated really encompassed the meaning of the quote.

What I really learned that’s valuable for the future was not to get stuck on the first design. Even though I went with my first design, I learned that venturing out pushed me to be creative in other ways and combining new ideas into another design was really helpful.

This project may have sounded easy at first. Get a picture and quote and put them together to form a new picture, yet it was anything but. First, I was not sure what quote to use I was torn between three really good quotes. I ended up choosing my quote by closing, my eyes and picking. Finding a picture that would go with the quote was fun there are thousands of pictures of heels online. What really narrowed it done was the size and the red heels, I picked just drew me in, red is a really bold color that demands your attention. Putting the picture and quote together was a bit of work because it had to have a variety of different positions. That’s where being creative comes in overall I liked this project it was fun and forced me to be patient.

I really enjoyed this project. Some of the reasons why are:

  • Real life application- I do social media marketing. I always have to put quotes on photos. Before I would use a very simple text to photo app and the photo would be “good enough to post”. Now after spending time to analyze the photo as well as the quote and allow them to complement each other as well as allowing the design to speak for itself not just using a typeface that speaks for the text
  • Endless Possibilities – This project really opened up my eye to the fact that the same photo and quote can look so many different ways and read so many ways based on the placement of it.

This was a very fun and engaging project. Although it wasn’t easy it was a huge learning and experimental lesson.

This project was incredibly eye-opening for me. The process of progressively making my idea come to life helped me realize that art can be found anywhere and can be expressed in any way. Starting from just a photo and quote I was able to communicate the meaning behind my work in a simple, yet effective way. As I continued designing, I focussed on making subtle changes to produce fascinating aspects with significant meanings. Also, I made numerous designs varying in placement of the photo and quote. In the end, I was torn between 3 designs. After careful consideration, I chose one of my first designs because of it’s simplicity and captivity.

Some things I learned along the way of creating this project are going to be very helpful for me in the upcoming designs and projects I will be woking with in this class. I familiarized myself with new commands in InDesign and worked with Photoshop. I enjoyed working on this project and hope there will be others like this one.

At first, I wanted to use my favorite quote from the Harry Potter series, “I solemnly swear that I’m up to no good”, but finding the write image and putting the design together was very challenging to me. As a result, I chose to scrap that idea and choose the quote that I used in my Ad Hoc proposal; “Beauty is truth’s smile when she beholds her own face in a perfect mirror.”

I chose to use the piece “Schizophrenia” by Rama Mozell as my picture, since it had different cut up images of women’s faces. I had the perfect picture and quote, but still faced many challenges.

At first, I just used the picture whole by doing a full bleed and variations of it on the page. I also did different colors and variations of the typefaces, Bodoni and Helvetica. I was still stuck until I got the suggestion to cut the image into pieces. After cutting the images up, I found the designing process a lot easier and played with the cut up images until I got my final design. I ended up positioning the images in a way that looked like one woman’s face and used the typeface Helvetica, but I made the position of the texts and the pictures uneven so that I could truly embody the quote; accepting all of your imperfections is what makes you perfect.

Overall, I learned that with that extra push and a lot of patience, I can present my mind with more ideas that I would’ve never thought of.

This project was challenging to me because I was over-designing in the beginning. I thought I was doing okay… I started with a simple bled image of butterflies and placed the quote in the clear space in the image. But I thought it was too simple. So I added two other images that I thought would get my point across. I wanted the viewer to notice the symmetry inherent in nature. But I added too many images with too many design elements in the text. It looked cluttered and complicated. I wanted more subtlety but that’s just not what I was getting. I decided to choose the image of the honeycombs because I could put the words in the quote inside the honeycombs and play on the word “deep” and “nature”. Finally I had a design that was simple yet unordinary. I liked that i put each letter in the word “nature” in its own honeycomb to highlight it’s importance.

Critiquing my work now there are some things I should change. Very subtle but substantial changes. I had two lines that weren’t spaced apart from each other the same distance as the other lines. Also, the text was hard to read as it was kind of small. I chose a small type size because the longer words would not fit comfortably in the honeycomb. I still should of resolved the problem by perhaps going .5 or even .25 bigger. I also should of made “nature” bold so it really stands out. The lesson that I learned is this– just like an essay in English class, a graphic work must also be revised and revised and revised.

For this project, I planed to use my motto” Live fast, die young, and have a good-looking corpse”.  However, when I found the picture I want to use, and tried to sketch the thumbnails, I noticed the quote may be too long for the design. So I cut the sentence off, and it turned out really nice. The most difficult parts of this assignment for are the type face and letter spacing. The color I decided to use for the letters worked well, but the letter spacing gave me a hard time. I tried several different spacing, and they either made it looks too messy or run all over the place. The type face I used was Bodoni book. I tried all the five typefaces and the different form of them before I decided to use bodoni book. This typeface matched well with my picture, a record. It iwa simple and the color made it stands out and harmony with the image.

For this project, when making my sketches I didn’t realize that I wasn’t creating new ideas, I was just making variations of the same idea. After re-doing my sketches and thinking more I was able to come up with many more ideas for my project. While working in Indesign I was also able to come up with even more. I decided to use Century Expanded for my type because I thought it worked best with my quote about adventure. While working with the text I really wanted to make Passion and Adventure the first words you saw when looking at my project. I really thought that was important because they help convey what the image is about. I also thought that mirroring the image was a great idea because you can get a better sense of adventure. From the project, I learned that you don’t always come up with your best ideas on the first try, and that you need to try try again. I also learned that taking risks and stepping out of your comfort zone can help you come up with so many great and new ideas.

For this project we were directed to overlay a quote on an image, both of our choice. I chose a favorite quote of mine and chose an abstract painting as my image. I had toyed around with the idea of using a more literary image, of a broken glass or rose, but chose to keep the background and text simple to highlight the quote itself. I played around with the text placement, choosing to put a white box behind the text to help it pop from the busy background. For the font I chose Helvetica, a long time favorite although a bit overused at times. I increased the letting, attempting to help the letters stand out from the other elements. All in all I am confident with the result and look forward to creating more!
