Our life are now connected with everything via internet. As the day passes by we are becoming more and more dependable on technology, internet to be exact. Internet gave us the power to order food, shopping without the hassle of going out on a snowy day. Unfortunately everything comes with a price. The more we get involved with technology and internet, the more we put our own information out there in ‘secure’ server.
Social media became really strong after the invention of Internet. Facebook and Twitter is now something we have to have to be ‘cool.’ On NewYork Times Nicole Perlroth wrote an article that goes to explain how online shopping system is prone to attack of cyber-crime.
We can all relate to this article, because at some point we all did and will shop online. Hackers are also being mutated like flu virus, as they are cracking all the new ‘security’ technology of secure server. I personally feel really anxious to feel that in some way someone can access my personal data. I think we should all think about the things we put on the internet, because changing privacy options are not enough any more. As we cannot control the hackers from hacking or stealing our information, but we can at least control what we put through internet. A click in unwanted link can cause hell break loose on personal life.
I think that you’re right about how much of our information we should actually put on the internet. I know personally, I’m guilty of shopping online. Sometimes I really don’t think about what could potentially happen-bad I know! I think that your post has brought to my attention that I and all of us in general should really be careful. I’ve heard of so many cases where people had their credit cards accounts hacked and how they got their information stolen. It also brings me to when we use our debit/ credit cards in store- the target situation on black friday. Can you believe it? Even a big chain store like Target got their system hacked, and had more than half of their client list credit information stolen. It’s scary knowing that one click or even one swipe could potentially be so dangerous.
I feel that this speaks volumes about how as society gets more advanced, technology gets more advanced and then abused. Back 50 years, there was no such thing as online shopping and now that there is – it should be seen as something positive and helpful but instead it can be seen as something potentially dangerous because your sensitive information can be taken away at any time by someone miles and miles away and the possibility that they may never be caught is even more daunting.
The U.S. Department of justice recognizes three types of cyber-crimes: those that use the computer as a weapon; those that use the computer as an accessory to a crime; or those that make the computer a target of a crime.
– Example of cyber-crimes –
1. Illegal gambling- Gambling is illegal in many U.S. states, and is prohibited online unless you are physically located in a state that allows it.
2. Identify theft- use the internet to break into victims’ online financial accounts, taking passwords, money and sensitive information.
3. Computer viruses- Computer hackers are digital age criminals that can bring down large infrastructures with a single keystroke emitting a computer virus.
