Online changing learning everyday

When I was a child, learning meant go to school physically, carry book bag, take notes and then decide whats important to study.Lets look at today’s world. Online learning is taking over slowly and giving people the flexibility to learn from wherever they want.

Khanacademy.org started on September 2006 as a test project and vision was simple: ‘a free, world-class education for anyone, anywhere.’ Eight years later Khanacademy.org is a known place for free learning experience on almost all subject matter. They have early math to differential calculus, economics, finance, test prep like SAT for free. The idea revolutionized online education. Looking at their success Kaplan updated their online education system and now all the subject is available in Kaplan for comparatively less money then actual tuition fees.

As the days go on we will see more internet integration into education and making it easier for students to learn. There is also potential bad. Many teachers throughout the country feels that online education system will be taking over traditional education and students will not learn everything thoroughly and putting a lot of physical education organization out of system. I guess the future holds the key for future education system.

Net Neutrality

As we talked about in the class today about net neutrality in class today, when I came home I researched the topic out of curiosity. While researching I came upon this article from the NYTimes.

It appears that FCC after all start to move towards a Net Neutrality plan. During the vote today the plan was moved forward with a 3-2 win. So what does it mean to have Net Neutrality plan. In the article it explained:

That essentially means that as long as an Internet service provider does not slow down the service that a consumer pays for, the provider can give faster service to a company that pays to get its content to consumers in an unimpeded manner.”

While we were doing the role playing game today about the carriers controlling controlling their bandwidth, it appeared who will win the game at the end: large corporation with huge amount of money. Very soon we will start to see it’s effect on our lives. Netflix is already increasing its fee towards new members to $8.99. At the end the consumer will get effected in long term.

‘Open’ Internet: Good or Bad?

Our world is connected via vast network on internet. We can virtually do almost anything on internet now a days. In this class we saw all kind of usage and purposes of internet that was revealed in last 2 years. I read an article on the New York Times named ‘Defending the Open Internet’ , Jeff Somer analyzes what can be the possible future for ‘open’ internet.

Throughout the semester we looked at our textbook and different types of videos, software or applications (on phones) that are connecting people in organizations. One can do a lot of things using internet. It is appeared that internet has appeared to be the new unfinished canvas with infinite potential. Internet can be used for good like raising money for fundraisers or getting some help with life problems. It also can be the place where terrorist gather information for their attack.

This topic will be under a lot of debate for coming future, but personally I  don’t think there will any barrier on the internet. Chinese government censors a lot and they are being criticized from everybody , but in open democratic country like USA it will be impossible to sensor internet.

Homework 5 Question 2

If anyone has any kind of question these days first thing we do is to ask Google. Google revolutionized how we get our answers. Now it takes a fraction of a second to get a desired answer or a way to find it. There is videos, pictures and news in Google arsenal to support this huge questions and answer.

I personally take my online privacy very seriously. First of the bat i don’t put too much stuff on the internet. If I put something I don’t want other people to see than I shouldn’t put it on the internet at all. All the information we put in the internet is saved in servers and as the technology progresses so does the hackers. Anything on the internet can be hacked and access in seconds. In my browser I also chose the option ‘Do Not Track Me’ option. This option enables browsers safety feature. Every website we access saves a cookie on our browser. Cookies saves our information from the website which lets the website to make a database. Deleting cookies on a regular basis and enabling the ‘Do Not Track Me’ feature saves a little bit more privacy to content. On my social media websites I have a strict privacy set up. My profile can’t be found on any search engine and every can’t look at my profile.

Generation Like

Dimensions of social media and its impact is changing everyday. ‘Generation Like’ video gives us a clear picture about the future. Going through business degree in Baruch College, I was constantly taught that success is rooted in networking. In this video however it takes a whole new level.

Social media websites are becoming to be the prime place to network. In the video we saw the teens were so devoted about how many likes or how many comments they get on Facebook profile picture. Getting all this ‘likes’ or all the comment on the post creating a social bravado. New way to be cool is how popular someone’s social media posts are getting. Then we saw the kid play skateboard and eventually getting sponsored and Youtube videos are certainly bumping the popularity up. Then we saw how one Youtube channel gets promoted by another Youtube channel. It is creating a whole different type of world than what it used to be. Now to be famous have to create a youtube channel and create an audience with same type of interest and these users have their own channels.

So what all this means? There is always upside and downside for everything. Upside maybe that we can connect seamlessly anywhere in earth with internet. We can share our ideas, promote creativity, start a career. Downside maybe all the big corporation targeting  the teens and making them seem like there is nothing wrong. When our next generation looks at the mutated social media and how it works, then everybody want to do it. This some statistics I found on Youtube website:

Viewership

  • More than 1 billion unique users visit YouTube each month
  • Over 6 billion hours of video are watched each month on YouTube—that’s almost an hour for every person on Earth
  • 100 hours of video are uploaded to YouTube every minute
  • 80% of YouTube traffic comes from outside the US
  • YouTube is localized in 61 countries and across 61 languages
  • According to Nielsen, YouTube reaches more US adults ages 18-34 than any cable network
  • Millions of subscriptions happen each day. The number of people subscribing daily is up more than 3x since last year, and the number of daily subscriptions is up more than 4x since last year

YouTube Partner Program

  • Created in 2007, we now have more than a million creators from over 30 countries around the world earning money from their YouTube videos
  • Thousands of channels are making six figures a year

Monetization

  • Thousands of advertisers are using TrueView in-stream and 75% of our in-stream ads are now skippable
  • We have more than a million advertisers using Google ad platforms, the majority of which are small businesses

Mobile and Devices

  • Mobile makes up almost 40% of YouTube’s global watch time
  • YouTube is available on hundreds of millions of devices

Content ID

  • Content ID scans over 400 years of video every day
  • More than 5,000 partners use Content ID, including major US network broadcasters, movie studios and record labels
  • We have more than 25 million reference files in our Content ID database; it’s among the most comprehensive in the world
  • Content ID has generated hundreds of millions of dollars for partners.

If we look at it, we can see how our life and media is changing rapidly. Hopefully it will not self destruct itself making a balance between upside and downside.

Can ‘Smart’ technology steal identity?

We all own smart devices. Every year it is a competition between different companies to make smarter device. These smart devices run by apps. Apple is of course leading the app market closely followed by Google Android. Just like the devices, the apps are getting smarter too and as we use more and more apps everyday it is helping the apps to be even smarter.

We all face the window when installing a window saying, “_____ wants to access to your contacts” or “_____ wants use your location.” Time to time we all press ‘yes’ depending on the apps. While I was reading Molly Wood’s article, I realized how dangerous it is become in terms of privacy.

On my last blog, I was focusing on cybercrime on different websites, but this one in my opinion can have worse impact. Hackers are desperately trying to hack to phone OS systems. Apple just released IOS 7.0.6 mainly because of the security threats. We use our phones to access our emails, text messages, and even bank accounts. We definitely should be aware what apps we use in our phones and stay away from connecting our phones with insecure servers (yes that includes Starbucks Wifi as well!!)

Cyber-crime

Our life are now connected with everything via internet. As the day passes by we are becoming more and more dependable on technology, internet to be exact. Internet gave us the power to order food, shopping without the hassle of going out on a snowy day. Unfortunately everything comes with a price. The more we get involved with technology and internet, the more we put our own information out there in ‘secure’ server.

Social media became really strong after the invention of Internet. Facebook and Twitter is now something we have to have to be ‘cool.’ On NewYork Times Nicole Perlroth wrote an article that goes to explain how online shopping system is prone to attack of cyber-crime.

We can all relate to this article, because at some point we all did and will shop online. Hackers are also being mutated like flu virus, as they are cracking all the new ‘security’ technology of secure server. I personally feel really anxious to feel that in some way someone can access my personal data. I think we should all think about the things we put on the internet, because changing privacy options are not enough any more. As we cannot control the hackers from hacking or stealing our information, but we can at least control what we put through internet. A click in unwanted link can cause hell break loose on personal life.

About one of my professor

As an Economics major I always had to choose the right classes for my interest and career. I am curious about federal economics which includes monetary systems. Last semester I took my class with professor Parul Jain in Eco 4201 (monetary and banking.) Professor Jain served as  Director in US Credit Strategy at Standard & Poor’s. Her expertise is mostly on federal policies about monetary policy and fiscal budget. Her credentials made me take her class as I always wanted to focus on monetary economics. She was also Chief Economist of Nomura Securities, which also gives her the vast idea of international perspective of economics. Her information can also be found here. As an Economics student I find her very interesting and resourceful.

"When smartphones were invented I guess these possibilities start come to reality. Now we have people breaking up over facebook, relationship status etc. Even though this is an unfortunate event, but its just shows how it is with technology to misstep."

"Everything we see in terms of technology is software. Android is an open source software, and that is the main problem with android phones. Apple controls every bit of software that goes into iPhone and thats the reason we never see any bloatware in iPhone. If we look at Android, different companies put different bloatware inside the phones. Eventhough this Android phones are packing a specs, but iPhone with lower specs can and does compete. App store is also a huge favor for Apple. It has apps with better interfaces eventhough the apps are same in Google Play Store. So basically the difference is indeed in the software."

"Robot always has been the future of technology. It started with the Ford Assembly Line. What we see in the video today was a real course of event, and we will definitely someday will see these robots coming to common consumer markets for public use."

"Social media tools has made our lives a little bit easier to contact with people and interact with them. I think they are really talking about social in a virtual aspect. I think they are talking about the physical aspect. For example, friends hanging out in a bar. Social media did implement a certain limits in our interaction."

"Being in business school, I can connect with this video a little bit. While I was planning to apply to graduate school, I was told to clean up every single social media website and make them presentable. Even though I do not believe to take social media website to do background checks, but I guess every employers deserve to know who they are hiring."

"In this case I believe technology was solid and did what it suppose to. End of the day everything comes to the person who is using the technology. She could play it safe and could just go to the police. In her case, she decided to confront the thief. I do not certainly think technology lowers our common sense, but I do believe our dependence on technology has increased rapidly."

"I personally believe Youtube has an endless potential as an 'unit of business.' Youtube's product is videos. These videos is being uploaded everyday, every hour, and every second. Through out the subway we now see Youtube ads showing people making a career out of videos. Say one of these people's channel reached its peak and the number of subscribers declined harshly. The person can create another channel and can actually try to use similar policies to get a better position. All the tools are there always in Youtube. As it is open to public to upload any video I do not frankly see any downfall of Youtube."

"I guess before watching the video ' Generation Like', we never actually knew how companies uses our data to advertise their business to us. Obviously we do not as an user, do not have too much of a choice in terms of participating. In the video it was truly amazing how Target managed to guess before the parents of the girl. In my opinion this is an opportunity cost that we always have to carry."

"The best part of internet is it gives your answer right away, only a click way. It also creates a lot of confusion or doubt in minds. Internet gives a lot of answers from a lot of different ways, because everyone can access the internet and put their opinion out there. In my opinion sometime internet makes finding the right answer hard."

"I really loved the Coca-Cola superbowl ad. It represents everything United States of America stands for. It is also funny as I was reading through the comment section, I saw people thinking it is parody for 'Star Spangled Banner.' I think it is a shame that people do not pay attention to details and accept the reality. Just like Lisha said, there will be trolls and they will always try to ruin good things. Still there are more likes to that video (43,071 to be exact and 10,301 dislikes) makes me happy because most people still take stands for better things."

"We are in a age that we have to share that we think is 'cool.' When they made the video I bet they were thinking how 'cool' it would be to video tape the drinking challenge. But everybody isn't same and Brent Lindeque is the proof of that. It is really good to see people bringing out good from something bad and may b e lethal."
