In class, we talked about how technology has effected our everyday lives. In my other class, Communications, we also talked about this topic as well and how most people don’t communicate face to face anymore and that may cause misunderstanding when you try to say something important. For example, most people think it is okay to apologize to their friends through email, text, facebook message, and many other social media. It is not okay and it seems like people are losing the connection they might have with the other person because they are glued to their phone. I will share my recent experience about this. Long story short, my groupmates had arguments and they were texting back and forth through facebook message for days. It was so upsetting to see how people misinterpreted what others said about them even though their original plan was to clarify their points. Well, things didnt get better, but worst! I got tired of their comments and misunderstands so I stepped up and told them to meet in person. When they took their time to meet in person and talked about their feelings, everything got better in 1 hour.
Do people misuse technology and social media because they are scared to face the reality? Does technology give us the power to say what we can’t say in person. Also, in samsunnahar’s post, she mentions about technology dependency; are we really depending so much on technology and cant even face the reality and hide behind our phones, laptop, etc?
Please share your experience too.
I agree you bring up a concerning fact about technology possibly ruining relationship. I think we can all agree technology and social media has made everything easy for our generation. When I say easy, I don’t just mean how easy it is to access information and etc, but how easy it has become for people to not face reality. I can see how typing “sorry” is easier to do than say now in days. I feel the best solutions to issues such as these is to step away from from social media and minimize our dependency to technology as samsunnahar’s post mentions.
I agree with your opinion. In modern society, technology and social media help us a lot to do work and enjoy our life. However, it also ruins our life too. It is because some people don’t notice that when and how we have to use social media . Thus, we need to understand what is the benefit of social media and how we have to use it in order to get advantage.
I agree with your concern about misunderstanding in using technology to deliver a message. When I read messages on my phone or laptop, I tend to skim through it fast without reading it twice, and it causes misunderstandings at times. However, the convenience of using technology to deliver a message is evident. Therefore, it requires us to know what kind of message we are delivering in order to know which way is better to convey it. For example, is the message important or mundane things, complex or simple, long or short? For the complex and important ones, we may then want to talk face to face with the person, and deliver the less important ones by using technology.
