DON’T TOUCH YOUR PHONE FOR 10 MINUTES

While browsing the social media site Facebook today i had come across an interesting site that had been shared by a few of my friends. The UNICEF Tap Project, which has been striving to increase access to clean water for children worldwide since 2007, have created a mobile website app that can tell when your phone is not being used. For every 10 minutes you leave your phone alone, Armani will provide a day of clean drinking water to a child in need. Personally this feels like killing two birds with ones\ stone. You now are more motivated to not check your phone every 10 minutes because the longer you go without touching your phone the more you give to charity. I honestly cannot think of a better reason why i shouldn’t touch my phone. The app works by detecting movement using your phones internal sensor. So far i have donated $5 by just not using my phone. I urge all my fellow classmates to help spread the word about this amazing app because for every minute your NOT on your phone, you are consequently saving a life.

UNICEF is an amazing charitable organization. You are helping others while helping yourself. Nothing gets better than that. I shall see how long I can resist the urge to check my phone.

Thanks for the information! (I am downloading the app) Such an amazing app was made meaningful by social media and technology. Imagine 20 year ago, there was no such thing called an app yet. And UNICEF would probably never be made as well known as it is today by the power of social media. Technology is indeed powerful in sharing information.

I’ve actually tried this and found a flaw to this. Even though you cannot move your phone, I was still able to use it and help raise money for charity. I know the idea was to try to stay away from your phone as long as you can but as long as it still works I think this is a great and easy way to help support a charity. I personally had experience raising money to help build water wells for clean water and know how difficult it can be to collect donations. Clean drinking water is a basic essential resource that everyone should have access to so I fully support this charity.

This is actually a really great idea by UNICEF. It really is killing two birds with one stone since it prevents you from having the urge to touch your phone so that you could save a life. Who knew you could save a life by not touching your phone? I hope this idea is mimicked by other charities or organizations so that not only could they get people to save more lives, but they could also encourage others not to be so addicted to their mobile devices. I think this is a good way to discipline people to not be so attached to their phones especially if they know that by doing so, they’re contributing to a great cause.

I think this is a really cool thing to be doing but I don’t really understand it. How does me not going on my phone allow UNICEF to give clean water to people who are in need of it? I mean, I am all for it, I believe that clean water is one of the essential things in life and that everyone should be allowed to have it but how does me not touching my phone generate the ability to give clean water? I’m not knocking the idea, I am just confused about it. And how is the clean water distributed? I guess maybe there are sponsors but why don’t those sponsors sponsor a water retrieval and filtration system instead? (maybe they are) or why don’t they just do it without making it hinge on whether or not we can stay away from our phones?

This app really opens my eyes and shows me how much technology, especially mobile phones have taken over our lives. I am sure the outcome and number of app downloads will show how well users are able to stay away from their phones. I wouldn’t be surprised if the amount of money collected through this app isn’t as high as it could have been 10 years ago when phones were not such a dominant feature in our everyday lives. I think this is an amazing idea nonetheless.
