Twitter just announced that it will be offering two new additions to their popular social network platform (to read the full article, click here). The first addition allows users to tag up to 10 friends in their photos. Prior to this change, the only way to incorporate your friends into a related photo is through mentioning your friends’ name in the limited 144 characters message. The second addition is to allow users to upload to four photos at a time to be merged into one big collage. Prior to this, each photo must be uploaded one by one.
These additions are definitely not unique or new to the social networking environment. For example, Facebook has incorporated friend tagging into their status updates for quite a while. However, on the contrary, Facebook recently adapted Twitter’s use of hashtags.
With all of these sharing (or stealing/copying) of social networking techniques, do you think that it is just a matter of time before there will be little to no differentiation among social networks? Perhaps there will only be one large integrated Social Network? Do you think this is feasible? If not, what is your opinion on the trend of the social networks environment?
it was really interesting post. I believe that advanced social media will drive people to share more information and data so that they can communicate each other with more people at the same time. That is, this new innovation will make easily people to use many-to-many communication.
I believe that social media platforms such as Facebook Twitter and Instagram will be a thing of the past in the next 10 years. I think there will be something even bigger then all these sites combined in the years to come. Well just have to wait and see.
Yes, I would have to agree with Jonathan. The world is moving so fast, and the internet is constantly evolving to be better and greater. Social media today is different from social media ten years ago, when I used to go on my Xanga and MySpace. Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, etc. are just social media networks of today; I’m sure there will be bigger and better social media networks ready to be launched in the near future.
Great post and creative thoughts! I agree with Jonathan and Miree that bigger and better social tools will be introduced. The assimilation among social media is that they try to copy each other to remain competitive in the market. Just like Apple and Sampson, they copied each other in different ways and they are somehow similar to each other. But at the same time, they are recognized as distinct products with its own brands.
I think our current social media platforms have set the standard for any upcoming and new social media platforms. I agree with the previous comments that there will be something bigger in the future especially when technology is advancing at an exceedingly quick rate. I remember when I was younger and just learning to become adept in social media, people were using platforms like Xanga and MySpace, but now everyone’s on Twitter, Facebook, Instagram, etc. Maybe Xanga and MySpace helped set some of the standard for social media platforms today, but while they did so, they eventually became a tool of the past. I can’t imagine what could be bigger than our current social media platforms since each platform is already hugely popular.
