Inspired Classroom Ideas: Fall 2020

Thanks to the COVID-19 pandemic, the fall semester of 2020 was unlike anything the students and faculty at Baruch have ever seen. With all learning to be completed online it was sometimes a challenge to encourage creativity, but MakerHub was on hand to help inspire entrepreneurial prototypes and artistic design no matter the setting.

Asking for new ideas after months of computer screen labs and learning was no easy task, but the students rose to the challenge. Here are some of the MakerHub staff favorites from the semester:

ART 4900: Professor Dell’Orto

In Design and Photography in Theory and Practice – a 4-hour, synchronous online course – the students were asked to create abstract sculptures after some brief instruction in Tinkercad. The students were placed into groups and assigned a shape to focus on in designing their creations. Following the steps outlined in our tutorials and some MakerHub coaching, the students came up with some great ideas merging basic and more advanced shapes, creating holes, and playing with height and perspective.

MGT 9967: Professor Kher

In the graduate management course Technology, Innovation, and Design students are given MakerHub guidance and instruction periodically throughout the semester, to include in Tinkercad and in the integration of kit-based electronics and robotics. The students are then asked to create a product prototype along with a video advertisement. Some of the ideas – and videos – we thought were particularly fun:

Christian (Jeiming) Chung’s Art Supply Design
Saheb Dhiman created an animated video for their slipper idea

We look forward to seeing what the professors – and students – come up with in the spring! Thanks to all those who worked hard this semester. Get in touch with us and get your projects featured.
