Mini-TimelineJS due by midnight, Sun May 3: This assignment, like the last, is designed to familiarize you with one of your platform options for your final project. This week’s platform is TimelineJS.

Requirements:
*This assignment will take more time than the Pinterest assignment so please plan accordingly.
1. In class we will be reviewing how to use TimelineJS. In addition to that, please watch this tutorial for detailed instructions: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EiAn89u0D7M
2. You will need to use your Gmail account to create your timeline (as you must use a Google Doc spreadsheet).
3. Create a timeline with three events (in chronological order) from the assigned reading (so any part of Genji from pages 186-252). Each event / slide should include the following: A title, 1 image relevant to the event (please use different images than those you’ve used in the previous assignment), 1 quote from the text also relevant to the event, and your own (at least 3-sentence) explanation of the quote and/or image and/or connection between the quote and image (whatever you want!).
4. Share your timeline with me by copying and pasting a link to the timeline in an email (to NZeftel@gmail.com). If you send me a copy of your spreadsheet you will not receive full credit. I must have a link (that works) to your timeline for you to receive full credit.

Mini-pinterest project due by midnight, Sun April 26: This assignment is designed to familiarize you with Pinterest as it is one of the platform options for your final project.

Requirements:
1. Figure out how to use Pinterest (it’s easy).
2. Create a Pinterest account if you don’t have one already or if you don’t want to use yours for our class. If you aren’t comfortable using your real name / email, you don’t have to! Just make sure that when you submit it to me it’s clear to me who is submitting.
2. On your Pinterest, post two images (can be paintings, sculpture, drawing) of art works that represent some aspect of The Tale of Genji. Write a brief (3 sentences or more) interpretation of each image.
3. Copy a link to the board in an email to me and be sure to sign the email so I know who is submitting.

Assignment due IN CLASS Monday, April 20:
Look through the background information posted to the blog and complete the assigned reading (up to page 86 in Genji, or the end of the chapter titled “The Twilight Beauty”). Once you’ve completed the reading, answer the following question: Choose a passage or quote (could be as short as one sentence or as long as a paragraph) that stood out to you in the text and put it at the top of your paper. Then do a mini close reading of that passage and connect your reading to any aspect of the background information you read/watched. This response (separate of quote) should be at least 400-words in length. Submit it as a hardcopy in class!

Details for online assignment due by Sun, March 29 (please note this differs from what is stated on the syllabus): Along with reading Books 13-16 in The Odyssey, you are also writing a short response paper (on your own) and submitting it via google docs to NZeftel@gmail.com. Instructions: You are answering the first question, and the second question is extra credit.
Question 1. There are many scenes in which characters (often Odysseus) disguise themselves in books 13-16. Find one scene in which a character disguises him or herself and discuss the role emotion plays in the scene, and how emotion relates to disguise. Questions to consider: Is the character who is disguising themselves also disguising their emotions? What is the difference between the character’s outward appearance and the emotions that they’re hiding? What is the emotional state of the person or people that is witness to this disguise? What is the significance of this scene of disguise? You don’t have to answer all these questions, they are just suggestions. Answer in at least 250 words and make direct reference to the text.
Question 2: For extra credit – watch the film (adapted loosely from The Odyssey) Oh Brother, Where Art Thou? widely available (on YouTube to stream for couple bucks) and then answer the following question. Extra Credit: If you answer this question, I will bump up your lowest online assignment grade to full credit (i.e. 2 points). If you have 2 points on all of your assignments up to this point, you will get one “free pass” and can use it to get out of any of the future online assignments. It’s a funny movie and worth watching!

Extra credit question: Discuss one element of (can be a character, moment in the plot, theme, scene, etc) Oh Brother, Where Art Thou? which seems to be playing off of or adapting something in The Odyssey. In at least 250 words, discuss what you believe to be the reasoning behind / meaning of this adaptation. In other words, what choice or choices did the directors make in this particular moment? Why?

Details for online assignment due by Sun, March 8: Find either a work of art (could be painting, sculpture, drawing, etc) OR a work of literature OR a television show or film (or clip from either) and that you interpret believe is influenced by or similar to Jacobean style. If it’s available- post a scene from the show or film or post the artwork you’re thinking of and write at least a 250-word explanation of your reading of this scene, and why you understand it as Jacobean. If you can’t find a clip then just provide the title. Make sure your example differs from other students’. Respond to another student’s post. There will be a quiz (covering end of Duchess and beginning of The Odyssey) on Monday. Bring both texts to class.

Details for online assignment due by Sun, Feb 15: In your blog post you are required to find a song from any genre (could be hip hop, country, blue grass, rock, etc, as long as it has lyrics) that reminds you of one of the Tang Poems we read for either 2/9 or for this week. Post a link to the song and/or its music video (if that exists) on the blog and tell us (with author and title) which poem you’re connecting it to. In at least 250 words explain the relationship you see between the song and the poem making specific reference to the song’s lyrics (and you can also make reference to it’s images if there is a music video) and to the poem’s language (though make sure the majority of the 250-words are not taken up by quotes but rather your own analysis/thoughts). While you may use the same poem as another student, your song cannot be the same as any student who posted before you (incentive to post early in the week!), so make sure you read and listen to all student’s posts/songs. You are also required to write a brief response to another student’s post. Don’t be afraid to be creative here, that’s the idea!
