Group D Audience Questions Check-in
Who is your audience?
Our audience are freshmen college students at a college’s Residence Hall.
Why did you pick this audience?
College freshmen are exiting liminal adolescence to the point where they are able to recognize that people have value beyond their appearance. Their understandings have gone to deeper levels than they may have had in the earlier points of their lives.
What is your relationship to this audience?
We have an RA in our group, and we are also peers to our audience.
Where is this audience located?
Baruch College Residence Hall.
How will you reach this audience?
The RA will host an event for them at the Residence Hall.
How will you know if your audience has heard you?
We are having an interactive activity, followed by a conversation between the audience, our helpers and us.
In what ways will this audience be most inclined to engage with the lesson? (i.e. asking questions, making debate, adding their own sources of knowledge, sharing the information with others, etc.)
They are going to have to write down, verbalize, and listen to critic about their own judgments.
Okay so I think you need to boost your explanation for the why this audience. Right now I don’t buy it. You could apply it to any community. Also right now your explanation is basically that this group has capacity to understand what you’re talking about, but generally you would assume that any group you pick will have the capacity to understand what you’re doing. What makes students in a Baruch residence hall different from students in a Columbia residence hall or a group of post graduates living in group housing or an intramural soccer team? All of these groups may have something in common, but where they differ is important and you need to talk about what it means for your teaching to interact with that particularity in this audience. It’s okay if you picked the group first because you just wanted to or you had an in with that group, but now you need to develop a more intellectually sound rationale.
It seems like you do have an “in” though which is good. I like the idea of you being part of the residence programming. Are you already on the calendar??? If not, get on it ASAP. People need to know about events in advance, and the semester is quickly filling up and running out. I think though if you can lock it down this is a good venue.
