Reference at Newman Library

New Database: DSM-5 Library

We now have access to the DSM-5 Library. This database from the American Psychiatric Association provides the full text of the latest edition of the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders, a standard reference work in the mental health field, as well as a handful of other related reference works.

Links to this database can be found on the A-Z page and the psychology databases page.

Library Catalog and SFX Down for Maintenance on August 2 [SEE UPDATE}

The library catalog and the SFX service (which powers the “Find it @ CUNY” button in our databases and the “View Now” button in OneSearch) will be down from 8 am to 12:30 pm on Wednesday, August 2. Here are some workarounds:

To find books and other items we have listed in the catalog

  • Use OneSearch (select “Books + Articles + Videos” in the yellow search box) but be aware that real time availability of items won’t be working

To find the full text of an article found in OneSearch

  • Use  the “Journals” section option in the yellow search box

To find the full text of an ebook found in OneSearch

  • Look at the details of the record in OneSearch to see what platform the book is on, then go to the databases page to get a direct link to that ebook platform

UPDATE 31 July 2017: CUNY has cancelled this maintenance work. All systems will be working.

No Off Campus Access to APA Books or APA Handbooks

We have two e-book collections from APA on their PsycNET platform (not to be confused with PsycINFO and PsycARTICLES, which on are EBSCOhost) that are for the moment only available on campus. On Monday, APA launched a new interface for PsycNET and, predictably, it broke something major for all their customers. APA is looking into why off campus access is broken. It may take them a few days to figure out how EZproxy needs to be configured with the new interface, so it may not be until early next week that we can restore off campus access.

Bose noise-cancelling headphones – now available for loan at the Circulation Desk

Hi all,

Starting today, we will be loaning Bose noise-cancelling headphones from the circulation desk.  These will be same-day loans, due back 10 min before the desk closes.

We can offer them to students looking for headphones but I think it’s also a good idea to offer them to folks who are looking for a quiet study space but aren’t a part of a group.

If you have any questions, please let me know.

Thanks, Jeff
