Selected Library Systems Down on April 10

On Monday, April 10, between 9 am and 2 pm, CUNY CIS will be doing maintenance on servers that will directly impact a number of key library systems.

Systems that will be affected

SFX: The Find It! button in our databases and the View Now button in OneSearch will not be able to connect you to full text.

Library catalog: You won’t be able to connect to the catalog at all.

OneSearch: The “View Now” button will not be able to connect to full text. Although you will be able to use OneSearch as as a replacement for the library catalog to find records, you will not be able to get real-time information on availability (i.e., you won’t be able to know if an item is checked out), to renew loans, or to request items.

These systems, which are locally hosted or hosted on vendor servers, will not be affected: Remote access to databases, interlibrary loan, LibGuides, study room reservations.

Workarounds

Books: Run your search in OneSearch (select “Books + Articles + Videos” in the search bar) but remember that real-time availability info will not be working.

Articles: Use a specific library database for subject searches or use the Journals search system for known-item searches.

As soon as the system is back up, look for an email on CULIBS and a blog post here.

Planned Maintenance on January 25 Will Affect OneSearch, Catalog, and SFX

Between 8:30 am and 11:30 am on Monday, January 25, a number of key library systems will be down or have limited functionality as planned maintenance work is done on local servers:

  • the library catalog will be completely down
  • SFX, which powers the “Find it @ CUNY” button in databases, will be completely down
  • OneSearch will still be searchable, but you won’t be able to:
    • get live availability data for books we own
    • place holds or requests for books we own
    • check your library account
    • link to the full text of articles (because this functionality is powered by SFX, which will be down entirely)

Visitors to Our Library Are Not Able to Access Ebooks from Books24x7

UPDATE: Since I published this blog post, I realized that in fact only Baruch students and faculty can access ebooks from Books24x7. Both the links in the catalog and OneSearch to titles from Books24x7 and the link to Books24x7 on the A-Z databases page all require getting past our remote access login page (even when you are here on campus). This means that there is no way for visitors to access titles from Books24x7.

Below you’ll see the original blog post I wrote (I’ve since crossed out the text). I’m sorry for the confusion.

If someone from another CUNY college has a made a special trip to Baruch just to access an ebook from Books24x7, please make sure that they use the Books24x7 link on the A-Z databases page to get to that ebook instead of using a link to the ebook found in OneSearch or the library catalog.

If that visitor to our library tries to go to a Books24x7 title from a link found in a record in OneSearch or Books24x7, they will get the remote access login page even here on campus (and this page is, of course, something that visitors here have no way to get past). A few years ago, Books24x7 changed some technical settings on their end that required us to set up catalog and OneSearch access in this nutty way.

This odd access set up–the remote access login from catalog and OneSearch links even here on campus–is unique to Books24x7 titles; you won’t see it happen with ebooks from Ebrary, EBSCO, MyiLibrary, etc.

Remote Access to Databases Interruptions Today [UPDATED]

[SEE UPDATE BELOW]

This morning, BCTC is upgrading our EZproxy software, which we use to authenticate off campus users, and moving it to a new server. Remote access may be down briefly here and there during the morning. This may affect OneSearch and the catalog. If you find trouble searching the catalog or OneSearch, these links should work:

Catalog

https://libsearch.cuny.edu/F/

OneSearch

http://onesearch.cuny.edu/primo_library/libweb/action/search.do?vid=bb

When work is finished this morning, I’ll update this post and send out an announcement post.

UPDATE: As of 10 am, work is complete and the new server is working fine. Remote access should again be available.

Maintenance Work to Affect Catalog and OneSearch

Between 7 am and 11:30 am this Friday (April 3), the library catalog and OneSearch will be affected in different ways by planned maintenance work by CUNY CIS:

  • library catalog
    • entirely unavailable
  • OneSearch
    • searches can be run but there will be no way to log in (using library ID number) to see full search results when off campus (but you can still click through the “View Online” tab on or off campus to view the full text of those items your search does find)
    • real-time availability messages for items we own (e.g., books that can be borrowed) will not display

Remote access to library databases (handled through our EZproxy server) will be unaffected by this work.
