Fitness Regimen of the Olympians

August 10, 2016 by NOGOYE BASS Leave a Comment

Have you ever watched the Olympics and wonder how so many olympic athletes are so healthy

Athletes are trained almost everyday to keep their strong and healthy body on fit. By exercising, athletes force themselves to eat healthy, warm ups in the morning and also find a way to enjoy exercise and also win during the olympics.

“As an athlete, I do enjoy exercising by challenging myself to run faster everyday” says Coumba Bass, a squash player in Manhattan . Athletes sometimes challenge themselves to have more confidence in keeping fit.

“Athletes work on building muscles and improving aerobic conditioning many months before their season starts so as not to interfere with their sport-specific fitness and conditioning needs” according to healthyliving.azcentral.com.

Most of the time during off seasons, olympic athletes exercise to reduce stress. “before the start of a season, athletes use about half their maximum weight or resistance levels and perform more reps on an exercise to build muscular endurance” says healthyliving.azcentral.com.

“When I exercise I don’t pay attention to anything that had made me stress or get mad, because exercising makes me have confident in myself I love staying fit because then I don’t have to worry about my body weight” says Ndeye Bass, also a squash player in Manhattan.

“I never skip leg day,but i never do cardio and i should do cardio because cardio is good for me” says Ali Ayoub who exercise at Blink Fitness. “If you already skip leg day then you musn’tve skip leg day and you would of been strong” argued Sam Wilby a teen who also exercise at Blink Fitness.

“The United States Olympic Committee has partnered with high-performance training centers to provide U.S. athletes with elite training facilities for their sport development. The USOC has established three Olympic Training Centers along with 17 Olympic Training Sites located in 15 states throughout the U.S. Millions of dollars were invested into these complexes to ensure athletes receive the best training in the country. Although catered toward elite athletes, these complexes are also open to the public for tours and event services” according to teamusa.org

Gateway Plaza’s Summer Nights Just Got Better

August 10, 2016 by Melissa Leave a Comment

Once the sun sinks behind the horizon, blankets are set down on the grass, and popcorn and chips are set down on the blankets. People sit out with their sweatshirts and sweatpants on, and wait for the sun to fully set. Going out to this lawn is never a hassle, because everyone there is in the backyard of their own home.
In Gateway Plaza, Battery Park City’s building complex, every summer there is a movie night at the North Lawn. Movie night has started in the summer of 2016. It is going to be a seasonal thing, which means Gateway plans to codynamic.aspntinue it from now on.Movie Night Gateway Plaza

For the past couple of years, Gateway has been renovating facilities in the complex. The management opened an outdoor pool back in 2011, which also includes a gym.

Although management was unreachable, many doormen and residents assume that they have added these changes to make Gateway a better place to live, and also to bring all the residents closer together.

If you go on Gateway’s website, it will tell you what movie is playing which day, and the times it will start.

Gateway kicked off summer movie night on July 12, 2016, by playing The Minions. Then on July 26, 2016, played Star Wars: The Force Awakens. The most recent event was August 2, 2016, when Jurassic Park was shown. Many kids were there with their friends, and parents were there too. These parents either stop by to check on their kids, or to watch the movie as well.

Haley, a 10-year-old resident of Gateway Plaza stated, “At movie night I get to hang out with all my friends, but since there are also so many other kids there, we usually end up all sitting and playing together.”
These kids are able to make more friends because they are given a place to do it. Not only do the kids enjoy it, but the parents do too. “I love sending my kid out to Movie Night. It’s safe and fun and she can finally get out of the house! Plus, she always comes back looking really happy,” said Stephanie.

Ties Between United Nations (FAO) and GreenThumb

The first ever food garden on international territory marked its first year on July 24 at the United Nations headquarters in New York. The UN Food Garden is an initiative of a small group of UN staff who partnered with local volunteers from the NYC Parks’ GreenThumb Program to transform unused land at the United Nations Headquarters complex into food gardens.Screen Shot 2016-08-10 at 1.23.51 PM

The garden encompasses close to 200 square feet of growing space. Ten beautifully designed metal raised beds are packed with a variety of vegetables and fruits from around the world. These foods range from chickpeas, lentils legumes, to Korean chives and Indonesian peppers. The food is used by UN employees or donated to organizations such as UNICEF.

Catherine Zanev, associate expert for climate change in the UN’s Chief Executives Board for Coordination and along with five-to-10 other members in the UN Garden Club team, volunteer their time to plant. “It’s just nice to be able to come out here and take a break from your long day at the computer and get your hands dirty,” says Zanev.

Last year, the United Nation’s Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO), recognized NYC Parks’ GreenThumb program for its goal for a greener and better future by taking a large step to support community gardens.

The Food and Agriculture Organization is a United Nations agency that leads international efforts to defeat hunger.

One of previous Mayor Michael Bloomberg’s signature accomplishments, was the implementation of the city’s first sustainability plan: PlaNYC 2030. Current mayor Bill de Blasio added One NYC, which revives Bloomberg’s plans and give them more depth. These plans involve, “reducing greenhouse gas to have the cleanest air of any U.S. city and  sending zero waste to landfills by 2030 in the famous city.” One step towards these goals are community gardens.

The United Nations FAO and New York City’s 2030 plans creates an opportunity to work together to support the same communities by solving two problems at once: Food scarcity and global warming.

Community gardens encourage an urban agriculture so hungry citizens can easily obtain nutritious food. They also encourage the growth of the urban farming sector in neighborhoods with necessary infrastructure.

Under One NYC, a collaboration between NYC Parks’ GreenThumb program and the Youth Leadership Council pushes for youth to volunteer and learn at 11 community gardens throughout the boroughs.

The FAO recognized the importance of community gardens which led interns from the FAO to interview sScreen Shot 2016-08-10 at 1.24.05 PMome of the youthful volunteers this month and place their inspiring words on plaques into the United Nation’s new food garden.

Liam Kavanagh, the Parks & Recreation Department’s first deputy commissioner spoke out during the “Why Food Matters” conference at the UN food garden a few weeks ago and stated, “With abandonments all over New York City, individuals and communities took it upon themselves to reclaim those spaces and turn them back into vital community resources… to recognize that there are people in the city who are food insecure. We as New Yorkers can help bridge those gaps… community gardens are apart of it.”

How do Security Guards Keep Schools Safe?

August 8, 2016 by a.diaz4 Leave a Comment

Security guards keep schools safe in many different ways. For example, the security guards do not let students into schools without an ID card. The Baruch College 2012 Book states,“Security guards know that you’re a student, but they make sure you swipe your ID card at the turnstiles, or else they do not let you into the school” Security guards will not let you into the building without proper identification because they want to make sure and that you are actually a student who attends that school. They want you to prove you are a valid student even if you forget your ID card you have to have something with your name on it or your student ID number. This allows them to look into the computer and confirm that you’re a student of that school.

In addition, security guards walk around the building and make sure that everything is in order and that nobody is disturbing classes or misbehaving. The Baruch College 2012 Book states “The security guards make their rounds during the course of the day to make sure that all is well”. When the security guards walk around the school building they ask the teachers and students walking around if they’re okay and if they see or have any problems.

Security guards keep schools safe by watching the security cameras that are installed inside and outside of the building, When the security guards watch the surveillance cameras from different angles, they can see what happens in different parts of the school to make sure that nothing happens. The surveillance cameras help identify intruders and trespassers. Security cameras also can tell the date and time in which the event occurred. On the website, Ehow, a story written by Ronnie Dee states “In the event of a security situation, cameras placed in the building can help officials find where the situation is”.

In conclusion security guards help out the school in many different ways. The security guards do a lot to help out the school, faculty and students. Security guards help the school by checking for proper identification, looking around the building to check if everything is in order and they do check surveillance to see if everything is okay in every corner of the school inside and out.

Baruch College Students Voice Their Complaints

August 8, 2016 by Jenny Liu Leave a Comment

Baruch College Library

Up the marbled steps, and through the dark, narrow security turnstiles, lead to the bright, open-spaced library at Baruch College. Near the Reference Center are laptop machines allowing students to checkout computers. Directly in front of the entrance is a white, curved staircase leading to the floors above. In each corner of the room, there are setups for computers, books, and check-out stations.

However, Baruch College students are still unsatisfied with the library.

Angelica, a senior at Baruch College, said, “I want the fourth and fifth floor to have better air because it feels really stuffy up there.”

Unlike the third floor, the fourth and fifth floors have windows to keep out noise for those who studying. The third floor is often identified as a “social floor” or “playground.” It is difficult for students to have both quiet and fresh air.

Another student giving his last name Turan, wants more tables and chairs, especially during the Spring semesters because there are “no spots free at all.” He also mentions that the great number of books appears overwhelming, hinting that the bookshelves occupy a lot of space.

Another student, Shemontee Chowdhury, said the library “feels dead” because the interior is “simple but unattractive.” She commented on the dullness of the library and suggests that the library should have brighter colors to make studying more enjoyable.

In response to these students’ complaints, Librarian-Professor of Library Science Stephen Francoeur, said that the library is planning to use “compact shelving,” which allows bookshelves to be compressed to fit more desks and tables.

Francoeur further mentioned that the library received recommendations from architectural firms that looked at the library’s interior structure and had set cameras to observe what resources students use. Therefore, the library will be remodeling for the first time since 1994. The furniture will be “updated” to more group “friendly” tables and space.

Also, the library is “redoing the heating and air conditioning on the fourth and fifth floor,” according to Francoeur. The fourth floor just finished and the technicians are currently attending to the fifth floor.

Sure enough, the Baruch College library is not only visually pleasing, but also working to create a setting that is comfortable and suitable for the students.

Technology Good or Bad?

August 4, 2016 by a.diaz4 Leave a Comment

Technology seems to have a lot of influence on the 21 century. The influences that technology is both positive and negative but I think there are more negative influences when using technology than positive.

Technologies positive influence on society is to make finding information easier for people. Before technology, people would have to search a lot of books to find what they needed and that would sometimes take days, weeks and/or months. Now while using technology in the modern era (21st century),technology is at our fingertips which helps to find multiple things quicker. Also technology  can give us new ways to communicate with distant family members and friends.

When doing a survey to see if technology has a more positive influence/impact on us I found that more people said that technology does have a more impact on us then a negative impact. The people said that technology has a more positive influence/impact on us because it can make us more smarter and mindful of things around us. To add-on people who took the survey also say that it’s good for communicating with distant relatives and such.

Technologies negative influence on society is that its making people lazy. With technology nobody wants to get up and go do anything because they feel as if their life is on their electronic equipment. Also with technology people don’t  have good communication skills because in this era we communicate by texting using abbreviations rather than actually spelling the word out. We also communicate while using technology we use emojis rather than actually expressing ourselves and showing our true emotions and how we really feel. Nobody looks in the dictionary anymore they look on the internet and they don’t go outside because technology is constantly at their fingertips so they feel they don’t need to go outside.

When doing the  survey I found that the people who did say that technology has a negative influence on us they mainly said that because it makes us more blinded to the real world because we live on our phones. To add-on the people who were taking the survey said that technology has a negative influence on us because it can cause harm to us. Technology can cause harm to us because when we are on our electronic devices we become unaware of our surroundings and what we are getting ourselves into when we are on the internet.

I believe technology has a bad influence on because we can do things that aren’t necessarily good. With technology being so popular in this century we are losing values and things that are important such as actually having a conversation, making friends, and learning to express feelings that can’t be expressed through a phone  because technology is overriding and overpowering everything.

A Life-Changing Trip to Costa Rica

August 4, 2016 by Cody Liew Leave a Comment

For 16-year-old Jailene Rodriguez, Costa Rica was a country of many firsts. It was her first time staying with another family, her first time ziplining through the forest, her first time using a shovel, and her first time drinking coconut water from a coconut. Her experiences in Costa Rica were definitely a big change from her urban Manhattan lifestyle.

The 2016 Millennium HS Foreign Exchange Club

The Millennium High School senior got the chance to travel to Costa Rica through her high school’s Foreign Exchange Club. The club offers two trips to the school each year, accommodating about 20 students per trip. Students must go through an application process that includes an essay and a group interview in order to be selected. Jailene was one of the lucky few who was accepted for the Costa Rica trip.

While in Costa Rica during her February break, Jailene stayed with a family of four. She was able to practice her Spanish and directly immerse herself into the culture. “It was kinda weird staying in someone’s home at first,” she recounted. But after a whole week, she realized it was nice to get to know different people and it was interesting to talk about their vastly different lives.

Besides getting to know the locals, Jailene also became closer with her classmates. She got to know new people by completing community service projects. Her group was assigned to renovate a soccer field. To do this, they dug out holes to place tires into. These tires would act as seats for anyone who wanted to watch the soccer games, a sport she enjoys and plays on a team for. She was happy knowing that her work would make others happy and that she was doing something to benefit others, rather than herself.

The Costa Rican Rainforest

Her favorite part of the trip, however, was ziplining through the Costa Rican rainforest. “It felt like going on a rollercoaster. There were butterflies in my stomach,” she recalled. It was raining on the day she went and she could feel the rain hitting her face as she went through the forest. She passed many sights, including a volcano.

Jailene left Costa Rica having learned a few things. She realized that although the Costa Ricans had the bare minimum, they were happy. They didn’t need luxuries to be happy. Secondly, the Costa Ricans used all their resources. They didn’t waste and they lived off of the essentials of life. Lastly, she became aware of her privilege. Having spent a week without a phone, she realized that she doesn’t need new things or material goods in order to be happy. Her trip to Costa Rica made her realize that we should live in the moment.

“After a while, you forget that you even have a phone,” she said.

Teen Pregnancy:

August 4, 2016 by NOGOYE BASS Leave a Comment

Teens across the world face deep depression when they are accused of doing the wrong thing by bringing a human to life. Many critics don’t even realize that they are judging someone because they got pregnant at a young age. They don’t know that some of the teens  were either raped or even forced to get married at a young age and then have a child at a young age. Many critics believe that teens are too young to take care of a child. Teen pregnancy is not a crime because it is their decision if they want to be a young mother or not.

Good or Bad?

Many people don’t have opinions on teen pregnancy. There are plenty who say there is nothing wrong with teen pregnancy because they believe that it depends on the situation that the mother went through.

According to a college now student name Aleida,,’’My opinion on teen pregnancy is that there’s nothing wrong with it,but i just feel that so many girls fall under pressure that it maybe leads them to having sexual relationship with a person and then they end up getting pregnant and when that happens they don’t know what to do after you now”.

Some say teens sometimes get raped and get pregnant leading them to being depressed and stressed out. They sometimes have to leave school in order to take care of their child and not getting help.

In some cases, teens are forced to get married and have no job, and when they get pregnant, they take care of the child being helpless and many people have negative opinions based on that. Sometime it’s also religion that gives people the rights to judge on teen pregnancy. Many religious people may say that in the Bible or Quran, you have to get married before you have a child and if they do the opposite, they are punished by God.

Teen pregnancy is not a bad idea. Many teens are still going to school while having a child. It’s not also good to judge someone if they made an act of getting pregnant because in the Bible and Quran, you have to let God do the judging.

For those who are religious and listen to the Holy Book, you are considered a hypocrite for judging someone because teens got pregnant, even if it was done intentionally or unintentionally. Some reasons may include forced marriage and rape. Therefore, teen pregnancy is not bad idea.

I am not against teen pregnancy, teens that are mothers are doing great taking care of a child of their own.

Why Can’t Americans Handle Sharing Bathrooms?

August 4, 2016 by Zerina bicic Leave a Comment

AllGenderRestroomNSchoolBanner

Although many Americans may know about the current battle on bathroom accessibility, a large majority seem to turn a blind eye to those being barred from their respective restroom. The truth is, the so-called “bathroom bills” target the already vulnerable minority: transgender people.

Many attribute this to Americans not understanding what it means to be transgender. Courtesy of GLAAD, a nongovernmental organization formerly known as the Gay & Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation, transgender is an umbrella adjective for those who identify as a gender, such as male or female, that deviates from their biological sex. For example, an individual born with a penis (typically designated as a male sex organ) whose gender identity is female is considered a trans woman, falling under the trans umbrella. The reverse applies to trans men; people born with a vagina who identify and/or express themselves as male. Also fitting under the trans umbrella are nonbinary people, who do not identify with either gender, causing an inevitable conflict with their biological sex.

The vast majority of Americans fall under the term cisgender, meaning non-transgender. They do not, therefore, have to care about these issues, allowing them to enforce the gross alienation of transgender people. Misconceptions such as labeling trans people as perverts or delusional still exist and are widely believed, despite the American Psychiatric Association insisting that “gender nonconformity is not in itself a mental disorder”. The APA goes on to clarify that it is the extreme distress of trans people at not being seen by others as the gender they identify as that is harmful.

Since it has been confirmed that it isn’t the trans people themselves who are harmful, why do Americans still fear sharing bathrooms with people who genuinely belong there?

The fear of sexual predators pretending to be transgender could be a valid point, although The Advocate, Louisiana’s leading news source, notes that “there has never been a verifiable reported instance of a trans person harassing a cisgender person, nor have there been any confirmed reports of male predators ‘pretending’ to be transgender to gain access to women’s spaces and commit crimes against them”. There doesn’t seem to be any evidence supporting these fears against transgender people sharing bathrooms.

If anything, trans people are confirmed to have been attacked much more often than cisgender people, according to Jody Herman, a public policy scholar at University of California, Los Angeles School of Law’s Williams Institute. Her survey of 83 transgender people in Washington D.C. has offered conclusive data that it is trans people who are at risk in bathrooms: “about 70 percent of the sample reported experiencing being denied access to restrooms, being harassed while using restrooms and even experiencing some forms of physical assault”.

There is no reason to attack and hurt trans people and restrict their rights and gender expression simply because of false rumors and misconceptions spread. This hurts those who already are hurt by the people close to them. The vulnerable are attacked, and, for lack of better words, bullied and insulted. Being able to use the bathroom is a basic civil right and it’s ridiculous that this has to be fought for.

The only way to make America a country that actually allows freedom is to let LGBT people have the same quality of life as the majority. Integrated restrooms are the first step to equality, and by separating transgender people from cisgender people, we only get further and further from our goal.

It’s the land of the free, so let people pee.

Reality TV: Good or Bad?

July 18, 2016 by c.mcpherson Leave a Comment

VH1 is a cable network that is supposedly known as the home of reality TV. However when you tune in you see mothers and wives fighting as if they were in middle school.

Is this reality or is it scripted acting ?

One of the shows on VH1 is Love & Hip Hop New York . It is about a group of females and males who have either made it in the music industry or trying to make it .

The cast ranges from music producer to rap artist to managers. This show can be considered bad for the black community and the music industry .

However this show helps uplift the females who are actually about their business and making money. The latest season shows the release of one of New York’s own, Remy Ma . Although she was incarcerated she is still portrayed as a money maker, mother and wife.

Another person who is dealing with the court system, however indirectly, is a newbie to reality television, MariahLynn . She is an upcoming artist who is forced to choose between her music career and bailing her pregnant mother out of jail for shoplifting .

Love & Hip Hop New York can be considered an uplifting yet character breaking show due the fact that you look at these women and men in different ways then you would have before this show aired.
