The Joseph S. Murphy Scholarship for Diversity in Labor is committed to diversity and excellence. This unique scholarship was created for women and students of color who wish to pursue undergraduate or graduate studies at the CUNY School for Labor and Urban Studies (SLU). It is available to students nationwide.

To be eligible for this scholarship, a student must first apply for early admission – and be accepted – to SLU. Applicants may apply either to the MA in Labor Studies program or the BA in Urban and Community Studies program with a concentration in Labor Studies. Both programs are flexible, interdisciplinary majors that let students pursue a wide range of academic interests and careers, such as labor relations, law, public policy, and social justice.

Awardees of the Diversity Scholarship receive two-year scholarships of up to $30,000 (graduate students) and up to $20,000 (undergraduate students). To be eligible, undergraduate students must have earned 60 or more prior college credits, with at least a 2.5 GPA. Graduate students must have earned at least a 3.0 cumulative GPA in their prior undergraduate-level work. The City University of New York is offering a summer internship program in Washington, D.C. from June 7 to July 30, 2020 for a limited number of CUNY students. The Program will be coordinated by the Edward T. Rogowsky Internship Program in Government & Public Affairs and a Campus Faculty Coordinator at each of the City University’s senior colleges.

Applications and all supporting materials must be submitted by March 8, 2021—no exceptions. Online interviews with the CUNY Washington, D.C. Internship Program Selection Committee will be conducted on April 16. In order to be considered, student finalists must be available to attend an interview on that date (time TBA). Eligibility:

The Program is open to any student who will be a Junior in the Spring 2021 term. Any major may apply, but students who wish to be considered should demonstrate an interest in and understanding of national government and politics. Applicants must also carry a minimum 3.2 GPA, and must submit two confidential faculty recommendations along with their applications. Applicants must also possess a valid Social Security Number or ITIN.

Remote Internship Requirements:

You must be available to serve a minimum of 20 hours/week. You must have access to a reliable computer/laptop/tablet with internet capabilities

Award:

CUNY will provide $2,000 scholarship to each eligible student.

Academic Component and College Credit:

All CUNY Washington, D.C. interns must participate in the Program’s academic component, which consists of weekly seminar meetings with prominent members of the Washington, D.C. community. In addition, students will draft research papers and written accounts/analyses of their internship experiences for Campus Faculty Coordinators.

Credits must be arranged—up to 6 credits during the summer or succeeding fall—by students and Campus Faculty Coordinators. All credit arrangements should be made prior to the first day of the internship program, June 7, 2021.

Internship Placements:

Interns will serve for 20 hours per week during the Summer Program. Based on availability, student interest and experience, the Program will offer internship placements in the following types of offices:

• Legislative offices of U.S. Representatives and Senators;
• Non-governmental advocacy organizations;
• Departments of the federal government.

Green Girls After-School is a STEM-based program for middle school girls and female-identifying youth from under-resourced communities in hands-on activities and outdoor adventures in New York City parks and waterways. During our weekly after-school program, students explore current environmental issues such as climate change, the health of our waterways, drinking water supply, and urban forests. Green Girls engages students through experiential, outdoor activities, service learning, and advocacy projects and aims to increase student awareness, interest, knowledge and skills in science and conservation.

CPF has created this opportunity for talented college students to gain hands-on experience working with youth, and to explore environmental science education while helping to promote stewardship and supporting positive youth development. Green Girls After-School program operates during the school year, after-school hours (3:30 pm – 5 pm) from March – June. Each site meets once a week for a total of 12 weeks online this Spring.

CPF is seeking a College Intern to support the Green Girls After-School Program Manager in providing instruction and guidance to middle school girls program hours for up to 12 paid hours each week from March – June. The ideal candidate will have strong knowledge of environmental science and basic understanding of youth development. This spring the Green Girls After-School program will take place online via Zoom Monday – Thursday.

RESPONSIBILITIES

• Directly support and assist Program Manager with implementation of after-school programs on Zoom and Google Classroom
• Co-facilitate meetings on Zoom and other online platforms, lessons, activities and service-learning projects for middle school girls
• Help design engaging, age-appropriate, inquiry-based, environmental education activities for remote sessions such as at-home labs, games, demo videos, virtual icebreakers and slide presentations
• Provide logistical support and complete general administrative duties as needed for each virtual session, including taking attendance, encouraging participation, supervising remote activities and breakout rooms
• Support the gathering of materials, photos, and anecdotes of the program

QUALIFICATIONS

• Currently pursuing a college degree in education, ecology, biology, environmental science, or related field.
• Experience working and building rapport with youth and/or children a plus
• Knowledge or interest in urban forestry & wildlife, water ecology, waste management, and climate change science and advocacy
• Understanding of scientific methods and inquiry-based practices
• Interest in working with diverse students, all age groups, and historically disadvantaged communities
• Commitment to Green Girls mission

Sandra Ung is running in the June 2021 Democratic Primary for City Council in New York City. At just 7 years old, she and her family fled genocide in Cambodia and came to the United States. Since then, she has grown up in Flushing with her family, attending local public schools before attending Columbia Law School. Sandra then worked as a non-profit attorney providing assistance to victims of domestic violence with Sanctuary for Families. Since then, she has been involved in local, state, and federal government by helping constituents navigate complex governmental bureaucracies and currently works in Congresswoman Grace Meng’s office.

Sandra is running for City Council because she wants to create more opportunities for everyone in the city. She wants to increase language accessibility for immigrant communities, improve services for victims/survivors of domestic violence, support initiatives to help our local small businesses, and increase funding to our public schools.

The Sandra Ung 2021 campaign is seeking motivated volunteers and interns who are interested in grassroots organizing on the local level. By volunteering for Sandra, students can directly connect with local voters through canvassing and phone banking which can accommodate in-person and remote positions, while working with an amazing team of interns and volunteers. The New York State Office for New Americans (ONA) is seeking an intern with prior experience advocating for the immigrant community at the grassroots level, interest in government with a focus on its nexus with community-based organizations and an interest in international relations. Governor Cuomo established ONA in 2013 to assist new Americans who are eager to contribute to our economy and become part of the family of New York State. The NYS Office for New Americans is committed to strengthening New York State’s welcoming environment for New Americans and facilitating their success.

ONA is seeking an intern for 10-19 hours a week for a period of three months. Office hours are Monday – Friday, from 10am – 5pm, but intern will be telecommuting; no in-person work is required. This internship is unpaid.

Internship Responsibilities:

• Develop immigration briefs on pressing immigration topics
• Extract New York State immigration statistics and findings from new publications/reports from the Migration Policy Institute, Pew Research Center, Center for Migration Studies, American Immigration Council, AS/COA and more
• Conduct research on the new American population in the different regions in New York State using the most recent U.S. Census data and help draft regional fact sheets

The Dr. Wendy Heyman Public Interest Fellowship awards 15 Baruch students with $3,000 each and aims to transform their lives by providing them with the means to explore careers in public interest. Heyman Fellows work in unpaid internships or volunteer with non-profit organizations serving the ‘common good’. This fellowship was named in memory of Dr. Wendy Heyman, psychologist and advocate for volunteerism and gaining valuable work experience while making a difference in the world.
