Life of a Sensuous Woman

I found this text about a females sexual experiences particularly entertaining given that it is written through the lense of a man. A lot of the text speaks about woman having to accept her fate. This involves non-consensual intercourse but by her changing her outlook on her situation, she is not only able to make the best of it, she is more the wise.  Japan’s culture has been heralded by Hofstede as having masculinity to be a distinctive trait. Their was an underlying message of female oppression with references to a daimyo’s wife’s practices to even complex third party prostitution. Regarding this public social prostitution, it is even noted “competition is intense and, candidates try very hard to make a good impression at the interview” which is shown on page 598. This interested me because a previous professor made the comment of how different the tone is when gender roles are expressed by the opposite sex. This text could speak about the author’s unconscious mannerisms to Japans societal values. Two discussion questions I have are:

If a female were to write satirically about a man sensuality in today’s time, would it sell?

When the female almost committed suicide to reach the Pure Land but a man came and saved her how did that make you feel that it was a man that came and instructed her of the proper ways?
