Feeling Thankful? Here’s How to Write the Perfect Thank You Card After Your Interview

With thanksgiving just around the corner, now is a great time to brush up on your post-interview etiquette. Writing a good thank you card after interviewing with a potential employer can mean the difference between landing a job offer or receiving the dreaded rejection. It also gives you the opportunity to put your name out there one more time and leave a positive impression. Here are some easy tips to keep in mind when drafting your next thank you card along with a customizable sample.

Tip #1:

Email vs Card. Even though many of us are more comfortable emailing a copy-paste template, the art of a good handwritten card is always memorable and appreciated. Keep thank you cards in your bag and write them as soon as you finish your interview where your conversations are still fresh in your mind. You can mail the card the same day or even drop it off at the front desk between 24-48 hours after the interview. If the hiring company seems pressed for time, it is best to send an email instead ideally the next day. Whichever method you choose, remember it is much better to send a thank you then to not send one at all.

Tip #2:

Personalize it. When writing the actual thank you letter, be sure to include a key point or conversation that can help the interviewer recall your meeting. A simple “I was excited to hear that you are currently working on Project A” or “Our conversation about Project B sparked some great ideas that I would love to discuss.” Mentioning a tid bit or a specific point in the interview will show that you are interested and eager.

Tip #3:

Keep it brief. Remember that this is a thank you letter, not a place for you to recap your resume again. Keep the content of the letter short and sweet by focusing on thanking the interviewer for their time and conversation. You want to be able to write everything down on the card without it looking like an essay. Below is a simple example that can be used in both a card or email format:

Dear [Insert Name],

It was a pleasure meeting with you on [Date]! I was thrilled to learn about the project your team is working on and it left me eager to contribute my ideas. I believe with my past experience and the skills I have acquired; we would be able to do an incredible job with it. Thank you for taking your time to interview me and I look forward to hearing from you soon.

Best,
