Latino designers showcase spring/summer collections at New York Fashion Week

Cesar Galindo and Shu Yang pose at the CZAR by Cesar Galindo Spring 2014 Presentation during Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week.

This article discussed the Latino presence at the Mercedes Benz Fashion Week in Lincoln Center. Pamela Gonzales was one of the first Latinas to debut her spring/summer collection at SoHo. Other designers such as Mexican-born Paola Hernandez, Dominican Cenia Paredes, Mexican-American Cesar Galindo, and Columbian Edwing D’Angelo were prevalent. The fashion show had a fusion of metallics, sheer, and tons and colors and prints. This was a great representation of Latin America in high fashion.

The Evolution of Beauty in America

The 1940s and 50s held iconic styles such as platinum blonde hair and the bright red lip, but beauty came at a much higher price back before modern cosmetics. The earliest blonde hair dye was a toxic mix of ammonia and laundry soap. Early cosmetics were no better with mascara being vaseline and coal dust, surely causing all kinds of health problems. Griddles held the whole constricted ensemble together, with stars like Marilyn Monroe having an inch smaller waist than modern models like Victoria’s Secret Angel Miranda Kerr. Fashion in America has evolved to be both more modern and more comfortable.

The Hunt for Red (Tags in) October

Macy's Gift Card

Baruch’s Fashion Club, Fashion At Baruch, or FAB, which is a very fitting acronym, serves to assist students interested in a career involving the fashion industry. Every now and then, FAB hosts events to attract students willing to participate in fashion-related activities. Last week, on Thursday, October 17, FAB hosted an event called the Red Tag Scavenger Hunt, also sponsored by Macy’s, with Macy’s gift-cards rewarded as prizes. Those who attended were divided into groups of 4 and given a set of clues to find 16 hidden red tags throughout the Newman Vertical Building. The members of the first four groups to find the most red tags each won gift cards. This was a great way to get students interested in fashion, especially with the gift-cards. Now let’s hope they make good use of those cards!

New York Sets Work Rules for Young Models

Fashion models under the age of eighteen will soon be recognized as child performers by a new law signed by governor Andrew M. Cuomo. This would mean that many more models to appear on famous catwalks in the near future would be much older and more fashion designers would want to hire more “seasoned” models. Since there are many limitations to come with younger models now, such as the number of hours they can work, many of them will not be in demand since simply hiring older models would be much easier. This law is tremendously affecting models and fashion designers both. “It’s one of the biggest developments in a century, bringing a whole new group under legal protection”, Susan Scafidi, an academic director of the Fashion Law Institute at Fordham University says. Who knows if this law may soon influence other parts of the world as well.

Movies and Shakers: Cinema Meets Couture at Milan Fashion Week

Milan fashion week is different to others. It focuses on the relationship between fashion and cinema.

Cavalli models were dressed like glamorous 1930s film stars. Whites, blacks and silvers were very present in the spring-summer 2014 collection, which translates into elegance.

‘’Eccentric, romantic and exuberant” looks was Cavalli’s aim. He looked into the film world because he believed fashion and cinema shared the same inspiration so he would be able to achieve the looks he wanted.

French-owned Italian fashion house Fendi also connected the two worlds of fashion and cinema together in an exhibition “Making Dreams” at a classic 1940s cinema.

In conclusion, cinema has always been connected to fashion. Female and male designers help create styles and trends, and the catwalks attract attention to main brands turning them into true icons.
