States Cut Power Plant Pollution Ahead of new EPA Rule

By now, we are all aware of how carbon dioxide emissions are harmful to not only us, but the environment as well. With that in mind, government, specifically the Environmental Protection Agency, has been coming up with ways to reduce the amount of carbon dioxide emissions being emitted by power plants and other large corporations alike. Some individuals though, have already taken on the task themselves. 42 states have already began reducing their carbon footprint within the last 7 years. Although this is a majority of states, 8 of those states have actually increased their emissions which essentially negates the work of the other 42 states. Read the article below posted by the Scientific American on which states are heading in the right direction and alternative uses of energy that large businesses can use to reduce their amount of carbon dioxide emissions:

Hope for the Dramatic Climate Change

By now, we have all probably realized the weather has been all over the place the past few years; crazy snow storms to sweltering, hot temperatures (especially these past few weeks). These factors are due to the amount of greenhouse gases being emitted which trap heat into the atmosphere. This causes an abundance of issues really changing the way our environment works. An example of this would be our current weather; this year is reaching a peak for global temperatures as one of the hottest summers. Key players are: the United States, the European Union and China, yet scientists are still not completely defeated. To find out more about climate change and the hope that scientists now have, read the article below posted by the Environmental Defense Fund:

Help Baruch Conserve Energy This Summer

Hey Bearcats!

The Baruch College Task Force on Sustainability and Vice President Katharine Cobb’s Campus Facilities and Building and Grounds staff have been diligently working to make our campus more environmentally friendly as well as more sustainable. Some projects that we have been working on are: the installation of energy efficient computer switches; upcoming capital project to maximize the efficiency of our chillers on the North Campus; LED lighting throughout the Vertical Campus and Administration Building with plans to expand; transition away from desktop printers to multi-purpose networked printers; and the repair and replacement of room motion sensors to control lighting.

With that in mind, this summer has been a warm one so far, and with sweltering heat comes a rise in the use of air conditioners at Baruch College to keep students, faculty and staff comfortable. While it is important to maintain an enjoyable learning environment, we all must recognize the need to turn off lights and raise room temperatures when rooms are unoccupied for a prolonged period.

The Baruch College Task Force on Sustainability is here to provide you with a few tips and tricks that we can all do while at school and even at home to reduce our carbon footprint and achieve significant energy savings:

  • If a classroom, office or conference room is not occupied, make sure that lights and A/C units are turned off.
  • Turn off all lights, computers, printers, fax machines, copiers and A/C units at the end of the day.
  • Report malfunctioning motion sensors to Buildings and Grounds by submitting a work order.
  • Pull down window shades to cool the room during the day and keep them down when you leave the office
  • Do not open windows.
  • Keep the doors to departments closed to prevent cool air from escaping into the corridors.
  • Maintain temperature set point of 72 degrees or above in window units.
  • Reduce personal electronic items in your office like refrigerators and microwaves and use departmental pantries.
  • Use stairs instead of elevators and escalators when possible.
  • Share ideas with colleagues and with us—we would like to hear from you. Please send your ideas to Matthew LePere ([email protected]) or Katharine Cobb ([email protected])

What’s Actually Driving Opponents of the Clean Power Plan?

Climate change is a global issue; this means that everyone is affected and therefore has to work together to combat this problem. Some though, argue that the Environmental Protection Agency’s Clean Power Plan is a waste of money, time and effort for the government and citizens alike. We need to try to get those opposed to this plan on board so that we can try to counteract some damage that has been done and stop damage from being done in the future. Read the article below published by the Environmental Defense Fund to find out more about who’s opposed to this plan and why, as well as the importance of unity when it comes to climate change:
