A state-of-the-art recycling facility is being built in New York City that will better help with sustainability. Located at the South Brooklyn Marine Terminal, this facility features sustainable designs, such as green roofs, renewable energy generation, on-site storm water treatment, and more. Recyclable wastes will travel via waterway, which eliminates the need to transport by trucks, to the facility. This eliminates 150,000 annual truck trips and much carbon dioxide emissions, as well as reducing road congestion.
The facility will process all plastic, metal, and glass collected by the Department of Sanitation. It will also house classrooms which enable schoolchildren to experience first-hand the recycling process.
The facility, named Sims Municipal Recycling Facility, broke ground in the summer of 2010 and will be expected to be complete by summer 2013.
