Final Project: The Lifelong Tool Case

The Lifelong Tool Case is a highly durable, combination locking customizable toolbox case. The case is meant to remain in your car, to avoid creating a mess of tools in your trunk or home which can be a nuisance to those you live and share space with. The adjustable straps allows you to attach this case to the trunk, back of seats, or in the front seat if wanted. The case can store any type of tool from as large as a power saw or drill, to as small as nail bits and small tool parts. The compartmentalization makes it easy to organize and keep track of tools that are used very often. Perfect anyone that needs to carry their tools in their car everyday. This completely rids the burden of a mess car or house because one is able to organize all of their belongings before even leaving the car, lock it up to ensure those expensive tools are kept safe, and strap in to avoid any rattling or damaging of tools inside.

Next Steps

Since i have a concrete idea for the car tool organizer that my boyfriend agrees with, I can move onto prototyping this model. I need to take measurements in the car and figure out all the necessary components that i will need to include to fit all of his tools. then working on the design aspect, im thinking about making it camo print, and i have to figure out how to incorporate a lock onto it. I will be on tinkercad and sketchfab a lot this week!

Assignment #3: Tinkercad- Validating the Problem

The original design was nice but would do the same function as the bins or tool boxes we have now, he would not change the habit, it would just be an unnecessary hanging box that I would probably have to put everything in which is what we are both trying to avoid. I want to modify my design to be a bit larger and fit conveniently in the trunk of our jeep. I want it to look very discrete and have a lock on it to make sure no one can steal it. I also want it to attach to the car, so that the entire box isn’t able to be lifted out the car. The design needs to be able to fit his drill, allen key, screwdrivers, hammers, presser wrench, assorted screws, tape measurer, power saw, knives, and any other tools he may need throughout the week. A compartment for sanitizing and cleaning for when tools get dirty is needed as well. This way he can organize his tools while he is cleaning the car and keep everything in the car so there isn’t even the problem of being too tired when walking in the house. He will be able to make sure that all of his tools are there because they will all have their own spot, and easy to see if it’s missing. He really liked this idea and since he organizes and cleans his car anyway before coming inside, it will speed up and make his after work and morning routine way swifter and stress free.

Assignment #2: Tinkercad

The person that I chose was my significant other, Michael, who does set construction for movies. Everyday he goes to work and I clean the whole house and organize all his things, then he comes home and throws down all his keys, and tools, and nails, and knives on the table scattered everywhere so I have to clean it all back up again, placing them in the places they normally go. Then in the morning, he cannot seem to find his keys, wallet, or the right tools. He gets very frustrated and impatient when he can’t find something, then asks me a hundred questions on where everything is. This is frustrating for both me and him.

I designed this holder to be stuck on the wall right inside the door. There are multiple compartments of different sizes to fit different tools and wallet, hooks on the front for keys and other hanging items, as well as small compartments on the side to store change or other items. Since this item will be stuck to the wall, it will be a reminder to him to empty his pockets as soon as he gets in the house, this way they will be easily findable the next morning when he’s in a rush to go.

Design Thinking

I absolutely love this idea, especially the new social value approach. The fact that this way of thinking is based on the people and not the product. The products and services should reflect the needs of the audience you wish to satisfy or create value for. Everyone works cooperatively, there is no hierarchy: CEO’s, employees, designers, etc. are all communicating. There is so much discussion involved before the actual adjustment to design is made. No ideas are bad ideas, there is only trial and error. This is exactly how i would like my business to run. Many times i feel that we are all on different pages, we have different ideas of what the business really is and what we do. I know that we must sit down and really define our mission, vision, and value statements together so we are all on the same page. We are straying away from the traditional capitalistic, colonized, industrialized way of thinking that entrepreneurs used to have; anything that would increase profits. Ive always though of this as a horrible way to run a company, a company that doesn’t care about social value is going to run itself into the ground because they are too busy looking at themselves. We must work as a team with the community we are trying to serve, design thinking does this.

Innovation

For me, innovation means to improve or create something that would lead to more efficiency within a company, thus leading to happier customers, shareholders, and employees. Innovation, like many other business strategies is about creating greater value for the customer, hopefully at a lower price to the company. So, innovation does not always have to be a grand new scheme, or a new invention, these days are over and almost everything has already been created. But to improve an existing product or service so that it can provide more value to the customer, this is real innovation. Like the article says, the best thing to do is start small. Innovation can be in the way the supply chain runs, one can innovate a system for POS software that helps it run more smoothly, innovation can occur in technological advancements that can ease the work put on laborious workers. Regardless, innovation is much smaller and more tangible than we think.
