Critical Question #5

How has avant-garde theatre, by making the experience of an audience member going to the theatre “more private than social,” affected the ways that the audience reacts to what they see on stage specifically their individual psychology, and how in turn does this affect what is being presented on stage?

The literal translation of “avant-garde” is “ahead of it’s time” – how can we interpret what may today be seen as Avant-Garde? Is it just something weird and difficult to understand, or is there an underlying essence that makes it ahead of its time?

Circus performances had long been a part of many world cultures.Specially Circus became a popular culture during 1800s to 1900s. Why people liked to watch circus performances and what kind of circus shows were popular at that time? Did rail transport influence on improving of U.S circus culture?

Theaters of the avant-garde

According to the reading the avant- garde artists are opposed to the bourgeoise society/ theater culture. They’re all about counter-culture,  develop and apply all these different ideologies that innovate theater, such as realism, naturalism, symbolism, futurism, and expressionism etc. So, are they essentially the hipsters of their time?
