Journal #20

The way Clockwork Orange was filmed and edited was very different from what I’m used to seeing in films. Like most films, or most performances that have sound, the movie used music to evoke certain feelings in the audience. In the case of this film, music by Ludwig van Beethoven was used as a primary source for almost all scenes. The effect this adds to the movie is that the main character of the film loves music, and his favorite artist/composer was Ludwig van Beethoven. While going in-depth with the effect of the music cannot fit into one blog post, I can say that overall it created a surreal environment for me because it made me feel as if I was in the mind of the main character, who is also the narrator of the film. The main character, Alex, was twisted and he killed and raped people with no remorse. The effect given by the pieces by Ludwig Van Beethoven evoke the idea that he is doing these wrongful acts, but it is as if it were normal to him and nothing bad was happening. Another thing that stood out to me about the movie was the vivid picture. Although I’m unsure if the quality of the film is that way because of how old it is, it definitely added to the surrealistic feel of the movie. Finally, the last thing that stood out to me was the opening song from the first scene, which played a few times throughout the movie, and this is done so the viewer can remember those specific scenes in my view. Overall the movie was very weird and different, and I feel it has somehow scarred me for life.
