Journal #20

There are two pieces music in this movie impressed me most: “Beethoven No.9 symphony” and “Singing in the rain”. Usually, people think that Beethoven symphony is elegant classical music and have noting to do with violence. But the director use Beethoven to tell people that classic music doesn’t teach people be a kind man. On the opposite, Beethoven in this movie is the symbol of angry, symbol of absurd.

The fast-forward of the sex scene in the movie makes audience feel ironic. While the slow-movement of the violent scene makes me feel a little bit scared. In the opening, the whole screen is red. Red makes the effect of blood. Then changes into cooler blue, and finally back to red. Just like Alex. He is extremely violent in the beginning, then go the jail. When has was back to the society, his evil face shows up again at the end of the movie.

The setting and custume also contributes the movie a lot. In the beginning, the milk bar is full of sexual symbol and post-morden art. The writer’s house is also the symbol of  modernity. Alex’s mother’s clothes and hair make me feel funny and even think about the future picture of human’ styles.

You make a good point with the effects of music in this movie. There is irony in the two songs. Beethoven’s usual calm and soothing ambiance is attacked by the violent actions by Alex and his gang.
