Journal #20

The filming of “A Clockwork Orange” depicts violence both in a visual and auditory way. The use of classical music is heavily used, as it relates to Alex and his extremely violent character.

The constant flashing colors and visually distracting images work to almost confuse the viewer to make his dizzy into this alternate viewing reality. This goes well with Burgess’s idea behind the original novel, in which he used his made up language of ‘Nadsat.’

Nadsat is used to protect the reader from the violence being depicted, however as a movie is visual, he used distracting imagery and editing instead. Where one is not let to focus of the violence for long enough for it to really sink in.

Close ups of the characters show them in a vulnerable way, where one only sees their faces. Although, maybe wearing heavy make up, they can not hide behind their clothing. They are shown for who they are, while zooming out to the bigger picture, of who they want themselves to be.
