There are so many things that could be mentioned throughout this movie. One thing that I’d like to point out is the clothing and style of all of the characters. To begin, the four brothers who rampaged through people’s houses wore all white with a black cap and black cane. This was such a strange look. Usually those who break into other people’s houses tend to wear all black and try not to be seen. However, this group decides to make their mark on where they have been like a dog. The outfits that people wear are so abstract as if it is in some future world, however it happens when people are trying to rid of violence. It takes place in a setting similar to that of WWII.
Another thing that I would like to point out is the treatment that he must go through to rid violence from his mind. They make him watch violent movies and basically put him through torture. Then they insert a needle into his bum which enhances his hatred towards the effect. The whole part was completely serious and made me rethink why people would treat this in the way that they did. They used torture to try and rid someone’s mind of violence. It is a complete contradiction of what the purpose was.
Lastly, the entire tone of the movie is so intense. There are scenes where one starts to question the feeling that the movie is supposed to emulate. Is the movie supposed to be one where people laugh, cry or just stay silent? I had to re-watch certain parts because I did not understand what was trying to be said about the main character. One scene where he is brought before his parents, he begins to cry because of the stress level he is in. I didn’t know if this scene was meant for us to feel sorry for him or be happy that he has finally come to realize his wrongs.
I completely agree with your last comment the scene where he hits his friend for making fun of the woman singing confused me. I had to crane my ears for his justification for his actions but still could not really make it out. I could only attempt and read his body language were I surmised that he had a serious passion for the music and was offended that he laughed. It was an intense moment due to the setting an all but made me wonder how should I feel also.
The costume in the movie was very different. Like you said, it gave off a futuristic vibe from the type of clothes the characters wore but a future that seemed messed up socially and economically (social class).
