In this world to make an impact is not easy. In order to make a real difference one must have determination and a real passion about what they are doing. Even then the odds are not always in your favor. However, in modern society the internet offers almost anyone the ability to make a difference, to do their part in spreading awareness, or making themselves heard.
Digital citizen ship can almost seen as important as your actual citizen ship. No one cares where you came from, they care how many followers you have and how often you post. With this it is easy to get carried away with the internet. To forget who you are and hide behind a better version of yourself. Although people can often lose themselves behind the image they have produced. You can create the person you want to be and still be at home in your pyjamas eating ice cream from the tub.
It is important that one takes advantage of the opportunities that modern technology has given us. Bad things are always happening online, but good things can happen too. It it up to us to make sure good things happen, to use our resources in the best way possible.
I think you brought up an interesting point about how people create this image that they want to be through the internet. I think the the internet has allowed people to escape from reality and who they are and create this self portrait of who they want to be. Do I think this is appropriate? Not really but the internet has become a place where people can do what they want whether it’s appropriate or not.
I don’t think “no one cares where you came from.” Country and ethnic background are still a major factor to someone’s digital citizenship particularly when it is so easy for people to communicate with one another over the internet. Racist comments are much more abundant online since there is little to no consequence. As you stated, people can simply portray a different persona online, which in itself can present some dangers.
I totally agree with your idea that you have to be the change in the cyber world if you want good things to happen. I also agree with Chen to some extent but i believe it depends where you are and who you interact with that brings on the racist aspects of online usage and there are consequences for publishing for racist intent I don’t think anyone just gets away with anything and I feel that the government monitors but doesn’t involve itself because of the constitutional rights to some extent.
