Theme Exploration: #jimlivedthis

Prior to reading the tweets we didn’t realize that a majority of the comments associated with the #jimlivedthis hashtag were mainly directed toward Pap. Very few of the tweets regarded the examples of Huck’s innate racism toward Jim. Pap is much more likely to be thrown under the bus for being racist because the reader sees him as a bad character. Huck on the other hand is given more leeway. Huck’s racism is more of an undertone then an all-out belief. He regards some of Jim’s characteristics as something that all slaves would share. Because of this we can’t blame Huck for what he thinks; it’s simply the conclusion that he reaches in his experience.

When thinking about how to read this novel from now on, we must focus on examining Huck’s ignorance to racism. He constantly insults Jim in every racist way possible, but he does apologize. He feels as though what he says is immoral, even though he does not know what racism is. We need to look closely into reading which parts are true insults and which of his comments are ignorance. At the same time Huck shows his morality by not giving Jim over to the slave hunters, and his conscious is telling him to take Jim to safety. The fact that Huck and Jim live in this “sivilization” allows Huck to come to these conclusion much easier.

I totally agree with this comment Huck in his own way is racist towards Jim but at the same time loves him I feel that it he struggles between what is right in his conscious and what is right with the law.
