#toogoodtobetrue is a hastag that we collectively developed to depict the hardships of Huck Finn. It means basically everything that it says. That whatever situation that we are tweeting about is too good to be true. This is often the case where Huck finally thinks that he got himself out of some sort of sticky situation only to realize that he has to clear another hurdle.
One of the main points of this hashtag is that basically the entire novel could just fit under the hashtag, #toogoodtobetrue. The reasoning behind this is quite simple. As the book starts, Huck is currently living with 2 widows who are trying to raise him right. We quickly learn that Judge Thatcher is in control of some of Huck’s money and investing it for him. That’s great news since Huck’s dad quickly shows up and demands the money. When he realizes that Huck does not have it he essentially kidnaps Huck and imprisons him in the middle of no where. Knowing Huck’s personality, he isn’t very ok with being imprisoned so he quickly fakes his own death and ends up meeting up with another fugitive. A runaway slave named Jim. The decide to team up together and run away South. This is Huck’s dream. Freedom. However, all is not as easy as it seems because they end up encountering a few adventures of their own which included but are not limited to, Huck dressing up as a female to gain some information, having their raft hit and split by a steamboat, nearly drowning, being taken in by a wealthy family who later gets killed off, and pretending to be Tom Sawyer. This was probably too much excitement, even for someone like Huck Finn. Eventually, as things calm down, Huck is back living at Miss Watson’s, his dad his dead, and Jim is free. Even though this is a happy ending all in its own, in reality, it’s too good to be true for 2 reasons. One, Huck is essentially back where he started and is not living his dream of living in nature. Two, even though he is safe and sound, knowing Huck, another adventure is just about to begin.
Other examples of #toogoodtobetrue are visible all throughout the novel. Some of them include, Huck being taken in by the Grangerfords. One of the family members bragged to Huck about how they will win the fued, and how no one has ever gotten the chance to kill him. Well, that was really too good to be true for him, because he was shortly killed with the rest of his family.
At one point, Huck and Jim finally escaped their captors and were running down to the river. Once they got to the bank, it was only a matter of minutes until they were re-captured by the King and Duke.
Lastly, Huck thought everything was going great for him on the river until his lovely raft was literally split into pieces by a steamboat that decided that running over rafts is good sport.
So as you can see, there were plenty of moments when Huck thought life was going great, until something came along and presented another challenge.
