My favorite part inĀ The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn is when Huck says “All right then, I’ll go to hell!” He says this in the context of deciding to keep helping Jim runaway from slavery and keep on helping him in their journey. To me, this is a momentous part of the book because we finally see Huck making his own decisions on what used to be normal in his world. Not only does this moment signify the strength of their friendship, but also of Huck’s independence and I feel that this is what we as readers and Huck as a character has been striving for all along.
Of course their have been instances where Huck has made his own decisions in things. For example, he made the decision to help Jim in the first place. However, he was still conflicted with the idea of doing so. This instance made his decision more concrete and that is what I have been waiting for throughout the entire book. I loved to see Huck’s character take such a turn because his consideration is what showed hope for the rest of the runaways like Jim and slaves of that time in general. It made Huck seem strong and more righteous than he did in the beginning.
Secondly, his words appealed to me a lot because he basically said that he would go to hell for Jim. This shows the depth of their friendship and I found that very adorable. It may sound very sappy, but I am a sucker for a good friendship story and I feel that The Adventures of Huckleberry FinnĀ is just that. Huck and Jim’s relationship is unlike any other of that time, and to see this change in heart for Huck really showed the progression of their friendship and I enjoyed it a lot.
This part is also one of my favorite part in the book. this scene shows that Huck’s morality is separated from and against the morality standard of the society at that time. the friendship between Jim and him makes him strong and brave.
