Journal #9

Many thoughts when through my mind while reading this book. During the first part of the novel, I wondered why Jim seemed so forceful upon Huck. There were many instances where Huck was seen as the lesser character even though Jim was the runaway slave. Huck seemed like a person who was clever and dominant in what he believes and what he does. However, when Jim comes into the book, Huck’s morality and the way he was in general just seemed to change.

Huck also seems to have an issue with inner turmoil that gets brought up during serious situations during the book. These thoughts become an ultimate climax of the book, causing a turning point or a twist. In chapter 31, Huck rips up the letter to Ms. Watson. While writing the letter, Huck believes that he is doing the right thing. Society believes it to be right, so he continues to write it. After thinking more in depth about the situation at hand, Huck rips up the letter causing a twist. Huck’s inner turmoil causes the best plot twists.

My final thought on the book is how simple the book is, but it contains such in depth themes. The book itself is just a story of someone’s adventures and how he overcomes his struggles. However, the book contains themes such as advancement in civilization, technological advancements, moral understandings and human rights reforms.
