Queens Village Backgrounder–

Queens Village was founded in 1640. It is currently under the Community board listed as number 13. The population of current residents in 2010 was recorded as 40,432.

It is known for its diversity and community lifestyle which caters to the engagement of solving issues within its community and helping to serve the people with their concerns.

The main goal of Queens is to continue its growth and remain structured for the well being of it’s communities.

In 1977, Queens Economic Development Corporation (QEDC) came to existence in order to represent the community and business sectors. They stand as a non-profit organization. There goal is to “create and retain jobs in Queens through programming that grows neighborhoods, assists small businesses, and promotes recreational and cultural attractions to residents and visitors alike.” This is probably one of the reasons as to why Queens is so diverse.

There are currently 16 Queens Village elementary schools, 9 middle schools, 2 high schools and 8 preschool schools. The percentage of people in grades k-12 attending school was recorded as 22.0%.

According to the New York State Census, done in 2010; it was recorded that the Queens Village median household income was $73,307 and the average household of people was 3.3.The percentage of people born in this state was 41.7% which has probably increased from then to now.

Queens Village will continue to grow and attract new residents to want to settle in such a diverse surrounding.

Cristabelle Tumola– Queens Village

Cristabelle Tumola is a Writer, Editor, Translator, Freelance Writer, And Food Editor at Italian Cooking and Living. She is one of the many who has gone through journalism school and has succeeded.

Accomplishing so much as she did in her recent years she started from columbia university graduate school of journalism and is currently working for the Queens courier as a Web Journalist and Social Media Manager.

Besides all the excitement she get to witness on an everyday basis, I think that it will be interesting to see someone in action in a field that I am interested in. She gets to see all the ins and outs of her business and can possibly lead me in the right direction as to where the conflict is in Queens since everything is so secluded.

I’m interested in getting to know more about this writer behind her work and what drives her interest in the story she choses to cover.

Amanda Burden 9/19

The New York Times article, on Amanda Burden, tends to be fair and unbiased. The author Julie Satow, does a good job of describing Amanda Burden views, goals and previous projects within New York. It is obvious that she did her background research and whatever she throws out about Amanda she backs it up with a quote or information.

Not only does Satow discuss the success of Burden but she also mentions which areas she could work on. “The High line didn’t create any new affordable housing, only condominiums for the rich, and the park itself has no open spaces for kids, but is more something for tourists to walk through”. (Miguel Acevedo).  Which she then challenges with a response from Burden stating that gentrification is necessary for growth.

However, I’m not sure if she means growth to bring new people in yet allowing the neighborhood to contain their current residents or is it growth to force current residents out? I do like the idea of Burden building more housing units closer to transportation which is over all a huge benefit for the community but that will also increase housing prices.

The image that is left with Burden is that she is determined to get her ideas out and is clearly about business, “… The identity of these neighborhoods will remain intact”. (Burden).  With her idea of remodeling, and remaking neighborhoods will benefit her as a planning commissioner if her plans follow through accordingly.

Queens Village Neighborhood

A suburban area located in eastern Queens, specifically Queens Village is extremely diverse and has a lot of people who traffic in and out of it or have lived there for many years.  These people come primarily from Central and South America, the Caribbean and Asian countries specifically China, Korea, Japan, and India.

It will be interesting to see the different changes that have developed over time within the neighborhood. The floods of people in a particular area have caused an influence in the neighborhoods. Small businesses in the Queens Village neighborhood consist of local delis, laundry mats, Chinese cuisine,  hair salons and nail salons. Recently, there has been an increase in nail salons relocating or going out of business. I’m curious to find out why. As far as the food cuisines are concerned, it wasn’t until recently that stores catering to people’s culture started popping up. What sort of conflicts do these food places face and whom or what are their competition and clientele.

With the availability of as many sources in this case Queens stores whether it be for groceries, beauty supplies, or take out businesses they all have to compete daily for customers. A specific area that comes to mind is known as the Fran hill shopping mall. It consists of several stores that specialize in food, a pharmacy, mom and pop shops, a McDonald’s, a pizza place, laundry mat, a supermarket. Etc. How do they survive on a daily basis with their other surroundings? In regards, to residents having an advantage with everything being walking distance.

Queen’s village has a publication called the Queens Courier which can now be accessed online. It features stories for events, the community, crime, and opinion pieces on various topics. It will be interesting to get involved with them to some extent to learn more about what’s going on in the Village.
