Gowanus Neighborhood Face

In interest to the boom in creativity in the Gowanus area, so many people and businesses have flocked there to live and flourish in arts and media.  In particular, I was happy to discover a art space called Brooklyn Art Space close to my job that Ive never really realized before.

I would love to speak to the art director who is Rhia Hurt who is also a artist and has been featured in many exhibitions all over New York and California. She originally hails from Northern California coming to Gowanus with a masters in Painting and Education. I will also speak to the art space staff and even patrons of the art space if available to find out if they live where they work and how is working with Rhia Hurt.

Long Island City, Queens

Positioned in the north western end of Queens, Long Island City is one of the most culturally diverse communities in the world. The tightly condensed ethnic variety leaves little room for prejudice. This is a place where you grab morning coffee from a Korean convience store, order takeout from a Cantonese restaurant, and spend Saturday mornings getting your son’s haircut at a Dominican owned barbershop; all of which are located next door to each other as if the corner of 48th Street and Broadway is some sort of small business united nations. L.I.C. can be viewed as a melting pot within a melting pot; neighbors who migrated from Greece, Jamaica, Ecuador and many other countries spend their week day mornings waiting to board a train that will have them in the big sister melting pot of Manhattan in less than 4 stops.

The Kaufman Astoria Studios stands with a subtle sense of importance on 34th Avenue as Policemen from the 114th Precinct patrol the neighborhood. Long Island City is home to the world renowned Steinway & Sons piano company, an array of family run businesses, Jet Blue Airways, and many entrepreneurial endeavors. The subway lines N, R, Q, M, and 7 make it extremely convenient for residents to access the most efficient public transit system in the world. With hundreds of cultural backgrounds represented in this community, it would be impossible to have the same amount of ethnically themed businesses consume it’s main streets; but with a hopeful economic future, there may be room for a wider range of ethnic businesses that will appease a larger percentage of the diverse 191,000 residents.

Queens Village Neighborhood

A suburban area located in eastern Queens, specifically Queens Village is extremely diverse and has a lot of people who traffic in and out of it or have lived there for many years.  These people come primarily from Central and South America, the Caribbean and Asian countries specifically China, Korea, Japan, and India.

It will be interesting to see the different changes that have developed over time within the neighborhood. The floods of people in a particular area have caused an influence in the neighborhoods. Small businesses in the Queens Village neighborhood consist of local delis, laundry mats, Chinese cuisine,  hair salons and nail salons. Recently, there has been an increase in nail salons relocating or going out of business. I’m curious to find out why. As far as the food cuisines are concerned, it wasn’t until recently that stores catering to people’s culture started popping up. What sort of conflicts do these food places face and whom or what are their competition and clientele.

With the availability of as many sources in this case Queens stores whether it be for groceries, beauty supplies, or take out businesses they all have to compete daily for customers. A specific area that comes to mind is known as the Fran hill shopping mall. It consists of several stores that specialize in food, a pharmacy, mom and pop shops, a McDonald’s, a pizza place, laundry mat, a supermarket. Etc. How do they survive on a daily basis with their other surroundings? In regards, to residents having an advantage with everything being walking distance.

Queen’s village has a publication called the Queens Courier which can now be accessed online. It features stories for events, the community, crime, and opinion pieces on various topics. It will be interesting to get involved with them to some extent to learn more about what’s going on in the Village.
