Design Samples

I liked this design because they used the text to make up the image. From far away, you may think it’s just an image, but in reality it is an image made out of text that describes the situation and advertisement.

1

I like this design because it has a lot of deeper meaning than just Journalism. The picture works well with the letters inside of it representing how their freedom of press is being “handcuffed” in English and a foreign language.

2

I liked this design due to the color scheme that caught my eye. Both the balloon, the woman’s lipstick, dress, and, beginning of the title are all the same color. The crazy ex-part being a different color and slanted gives it more life and emphasis as if the words were crazy like in the show it is advertising for.

3

I liked this design because they kept in consideration where these advertisements were gonna be posted. It was in a subway hall with about 4 pairs of all different, but similar ads. They used the bright, weird images to catch your attention which then related to the giant text in the next ad. It made me smile, it was a very playful ad as long as with its other ad partners in the hall.

4

I liked this design because it kept in consideration the classic look of coffee shops using chalkboards. They kept a similar design for this poster by using a font that has chalk life characteristics and the questions took my attention first which led me to then read the small font below it.

Visually Enahanced Quotation Analysis – Laura Martinez

For my project, I decided to use the quote “Never let go of your dreams” which later due to the design changed to “Dreams, never let go of yours”. I had seen the original quote a while ago from a book my favorite English teacher from high school gave me and I had always liked the quote and so I decided to use it for this project. Since the minute I decided my quote, I already had an idea of what type of photo I wanted to use for this project. I knew I had to find a photograph of a small child preferably holding on to balloon as a metaphor of someone holding on to their dream like the balloon. I was rather surprised how difficult it was for me to find a photo in Google I wanted to use, I thought it was going to be a bit easier. Once I did, I was glad I found the girl not just holding one balloon but many. A dream is more than just one idea, but it comes with many different parts to it that matter just as any other.

During our critique of our drafts, the professor brought a good point on the position of the quote in the photo is not very creative and is just sort of posted on top of the photo. I am still messing with the position and design of the letters in the quote to make it look more integrated into the design. The idea from the start is a simple one, so I do not expect to do anything too complicated with the words, but I will continue to manipulate their weights and positioning around the photograph to make the design stronger.

What is Graphic Design? – Laura Martinez

The article made me think of all of the types of work that falls under graphics design. As well as all the type of job opportunities available in the industry in all of its levels. It helped me understand more of the differences and option that graphic design and its designers have. There is so much that can be dome as a designer that your path can go in so many different ways. Design is not just something that “looks pretty” it’s a way of communicating with an audience.

My question for the author is there any sort of style of design that will lead to more success than others? Design is an art form, and like all arts everyone has their different style and mode of creation. I would want to know if there are certain rules and style that would lead that designer to become more successful and have better communication with its audience. I don’t really know the answer for this, I mean I bet there has to be something that all successful designers do, but is it enough things that could be said that they are the key to be a successful designer? I truly don’t know, or is design up to the eye of the beholder and has no special style or rules that will lead to truly great designs.
